Her actual emphasis however was on music as she started taking interest in musical instruments particularly guitar. Surprisingly, Amy never took formal music classes. Indeed, she is a self taught musician who used to play her father's guitar as a pastime habit. Her first major inspiration came from Travis.
An interesting incident is often quoted that hints at Amy?s early fascination to his music. It was when she was only twelve years old and got some money from her grand mom. She bought a CD from it and was a beautiful album The Man Who by Travis.
She loved the work and became a fan of his music. She got even more inspired when she heard Travis' song Turn in the concert in Park Festival in 2000, and wanted to play it herself. She then developed interest further interest in all kind of music and decided to adopt it as a profession.
Macdonald did not become star over night. She even did not start her career in a big way. She rather started playing at various pubs and coffee houses in and around Glasgow. She was only fifteen at that time.
She also used to play open mic slots at the city's Brunswick Cellars on Sauchiehall Street. Luck smiles upon her when she recorded and sent a demo CD away to an advert in the back of NME magazine and was signed to production company 'Melodramatic'.
Amy recorded better-quality versions of her songs with this London-based production and management company. The company?s owner, Pete Wilkinson has helped Amy a lot and encouraged her to fully showcase her creative abilities despite being so young and inexperienced.
Amy improved herself both creatively and professionally and grabbed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell and a record deal with Vertigo within six months she'd secured.
Amy Macdonald recorded her debut album in 2007 titled ?This Is The Life?. The album contained some wonderful tracks made for great listening. Tracks like Poison Prince, Mr. Rock and Roll,L.A. and This Is the Life became instant chart busters.
