There are thirty teams in the NBA and they are divided in to two conferences. The Eastern Conference is the more competitive of the two and has featured some of the most successful teams in the history of the sport. The conference has been around for more than sixty years now and some of the best players in history have played for teams representing the conference including Larry Bird, Michael Jordon, Lebron James as well as countless others greats.
Where it all began
The Eastern Conference was created in 1946 and had only six member teams at the time. It was part of the BAA for its first three years before being integrated in to the NBA in 1950. The Philadelphia Warriors were the first team to win the conference title and followed that up by winning the next year's competition. After becoming part of the NBA, the Syracuse Nationals became champions of the conference and were followed by New York Knicks who won the title for the next three consecutive years.
Purpose of conferences
The NBA decided to divide its thirty teams in to two separate conferences with fifteen teams each. These were further divided in to three divisions with five franchises each. The winner of each division qualifies for the playoffs, including one team with the best record, after the three winners. These four sides are then joined by four more teams, each with the best win percentage in the entire conference.
Their records are then taken into consideration when the time comes for them to be seeded for the playoffs. The highest seeded teams faces the lowest seeded side while the second highest seeded team takes on the second lowest seed and so on. In the end, the team that wins the conference qualifies for the NBA Finals to compete against the winners of the Western Conference.
Boston Celtics: The Eastern Conference's dominating force
The Eastern conference has always had very tough teams in it and that has led to some of the most nail biting action in the entire NBA. The most successful side in the conference's history is the Boston Celtics. The Celtics have been a force to be reckoned with and have got their hands on the most NBA Championships in history. They have won the conference and the division titles on twenty one occasions too.
Recent trends
In recent season the Eastern Conference has been dominated by the Miami Heat. They have won four conference titles in consecutive seasons between 2001 and 2014. LeBron James was the catalyst that triggered this Heat dominance. James then made the switch to the Cleveland Cavaliers and propelled them to the top of the Eastern Conference in 2015.
