Mika
A Lebanese by birth and based in London Mica Penniman known as Mika is an aspiring singer who rose to fame around the end of 2006 and the start of 2007 and has a recording contract with Casablanca Records and Universal Music. In January 2007, he was at the top of BBC News's Sound of 2007 poll.
Easily noticeable for his soaring falsetto and flamboyant appearance, Mika was born one of the five children of an American banker and a Lebanese woman on August 18, 1983 in Beirut, Lebanon. When Mika was a child his family was forced to leave war-torn Lebanon and moved to Paris, France. They moved to London when he was nine years old. Coming from different background to most he found no place at school and delved into music from an early age. Mika started writing songs as a kid. In London, he attended the Lyc?e Fran?ais Charles de Gaulle, Westminster School and the Royal College of Music, from which he later dropped out. The decision thankfully turned out to be the right one as it did not take long for him to land deals with both Casablanca Records and Universal Music, afterwards officially using the moniker he has been widely recognized of.
Relax, Take It Easy which features the melody of (I Just) Died in Your Arms by Cutting Crew was launched in 2006 to a really fine result for a newcomer when it broke through BBC Radio 1 and was deemed Record of the Week by DJ Scott Mills. More overwhelming response was addressed to Mika by the time his second single Grace Kelly came to the surface in digital download on January 8, 2007. A Queen-ishly vivacious glam-rock stomp, the composition quickly became a smash hit in the U.K, hitting the top spot of the country's Singles Chart less than two weeks. Produced and mixed by Greg Wells in Los Angeles, with two songs co-produced by Jodi Marr and John Merchant, Mika's d?but album Life in Cartoon Motion was released on 5 February 2007, and has brought comparison with artists such as Freddie Mercury, Scissor Sisters, Elton John, Robbie Williams and David Bowie. The album has a coming of age theme, and deals with his transition from childhood to now. His sister Yasmine, who works as an artist under the nom de plume Dawack, painted the cartoon art for his album Life in Cartoon Motion.
Trained by Alla Ardakov (Ablaberdyeva) a Russian opera professional, Mika's public performances and jobs have varied from classical performances in the Royal Opera House, writing in-flight music for British Airways and creating an Orbit chewing gum jingle. His debut radio appearance was on Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 show in September 2006, later with Jools Holland and on The Friday Night Project on 19 January 2007. He was the musical act for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, on 26 March 2007 and for Jimmy Kimmel Live on 27 March 2007. It has been reported that he is involved in the new Madonna album to be released at the end of 2007. While he is rumoured to have a vocal range of five octaves, he actually claims that it is closer to three and a half octaves.
Till now the artist has been very well received by pop and pop rock fans. As he is only 23 years old, Mika has all the time he needs to prove he's really made for the musical stage.
He slightly altered his given name, Mica, changing the c to a k, because he was frustrated by how often people would mispronounce it.
