Sports teams of Michigan Technological University, popularly known as the Michigan Tech Huskies, compete in Division II of NCAA as members of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, as well as Central Collegiate Ski Association, in women's and men's nordic skiing. For men's ice hockey, they participate in Division I of NCAA as members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The school own an exciting downhill snowboard/ski hill called Mont Ripley that is just across the Portage Lake and maintains an extensive routine of cross-country ski trails.
The Huskies are known for their wide variety of varsity sports including basketball, cross country, football, track and field, tennis, ice hockey and Nordic skiing for men, and soccer, soccer, volleyball, track and field, tennis, Nordic skiing, cross country and basketball for women. Their games become all too colorful with their cheer team which is really a noncompetitive coed squad known for its extraordinary dances, cheers and stunts that are performed on the home sidelines of women's and men's basketball games, as well as at the Sherman Field at home football events. Michigan Tech Huskies' men's hockey team has won several Division I NCAA championships including that of 1975, 1965 and 1962, along with seven WCHA championships in 1976, 1974, 1971, 1969, 1965 and 1962. The teams host as well as compete in the yearly four-team tournament of Great Lakes Invitational that is held in December. The event marked its forty-eighth year in 2012, in which the Huskies won from Western Michigan, and went on to win their tenth GLI championship. Their football program is more than eighty years old, which through funding from alumni returned to its glory days in 2004, when they won a GLIAC championship.
Their women's basketball program began in the 2009-2010 season, where it went up to the first spot and remained there for the whole time. Many records have since been broken the school including best winning percentages, most home wins, most wins, longest home winning streaks, best free throw percentages and longest road winning streaks. The Huskies women's volleyball teams have helped thirty players emerge in the last four years, bringing home the All-Academic Honors from the GLIA.
Michigan Tech Huskies' notable alumni players include NFL player Joe Berger; AHL players Lars Helminen, Colin Murphy, Brett Englehart, Tyler Shelast, Michael Teslak, Riley Nelson, Greg Amadio; WHA players Ken Desjardine, Bill Prentice; EHCL players Rob Nolan, Ron Rolstan; IHL players Jimmy Roy, Herb Boxer; and United States Olympic team players Paul Coppo. Some of their most prominent alumni to play in the NHL include Lou Angotti, George Lyle, Jarkko Ruutu, John Scott, Darcy Martini, Rob Murray, Mike Zuke, Bob Lorimer, Steve Jensen, Al Karlander, Michael Lauen, Tony Esposito, Chris Conner, Al McLoed, Jim Mayer, Tom Bissett, Warren Young and Tony Stiles.
