At the time, Richard Dawson was one of the popular panelists of the game show, and was the next best choice for hosting the spin-off that combined its questioning format with its team format from the original sixties version of Match Game. Family Feud premiered in ABC's daytime lineup in July 1976 during the afternoon hours with Gene Wood as its announcer and Dawson as host. Though it did not hit up to being an immediate success, the channel moved the series to morning sessions, where it turned out to be a ratings winner, eventually surpassing the very mother series it spun off from. Soon enough it was acknowledged as the top daytime game show.

Also, the most exciting round of Fast Money jackpot was reverted to a straight twenty thousand dollars. Following Harvey's introduction, the rating went up by a forty percent, and after a couple of years, the show had bumped up from a rating score of less than two, to four, becoming the fifth most watched syndicated program.
