With exciting performances that have been ongoing for over six years now, the group has been become a household name. The duo consists of musician, singer and female actor, Zooey Deschanel and songwriter and guitarist, Matthew Stephen Ward. They are occasionally joined by Chris Scruggs, who plays mandolin and pedal guitar, Scott McPherson on drums and Mike Coykendall the bassist. The idea of performing together came to the two musicians when they first met on a film set in 2005. At that point, Zooey Deschanel had landed a role in the feature film presentation, The Go-Getter whose director; Martin Hynes invited Matthew Ward to sing a song that would be played at the end credits of the movie. The director then presented the idea of Deschanel and Ward singing a duet together for his movie. They both agreed and sang Linda and Robert Thompson's record "When I Get to the Border".
During this time, Deschanel and Ward bonded immediately due to their shared musical interests. As Ward came to know about Deschanel's passion for songwriting and singing, he was surprised that the actress hadn't pursued a career in music. Having also provided her voice for the soundtrack of the motion picture, The Elf, Ward approached her to work together. Upon meeting with Deschanel he discovered that she had tons of home demos already recorded but was shy when it came to approaching the right people. Hence, the two decided to form a duo named 'She and Him' in 2006 and started work on their debut release straightaway.
The initial communication between the two took place through e-mails as Ward was home in Portland and Deschanel lived in Los Angeles. Both the artists' productions and compositions had a heavy influence of Californian music from the start. As a result the duo was seen collaborating with alternative country artists such as Jenny Lewis. Recording music at studios of friends and fellow artists such as Adam Selzer, Mike Coykendall and Mike Mogis, their debut release was completed in three sessions. Presenting ten original songs and two covers, their debut record that was named "Volume 1" was released through Merge Records. The 2008 release reached the eight spot on the US Indie Chart and landed on the eighteen position on the US Alternative Chart, showcasing Deschanel's songwriting skills.
Of the ten original tracks, nine were written by Deschanel with one other co-written with Jason Schwartzman. The two covers that were featured on the album included Paul McCartney and John Lennon's "I Should Have Known Better" and Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got a Hold on Me". The same year as the record's release She and Him embarked on their debut promotional tour, performing sporadically throughout America. They were also invited to perform at the South by Southwest Festival of 2008 and their album was declared by Paste Magazine as "the No.1 debut album of 2008".
With the success of their first release, the indie pop duo started working on their sophomore album. Named "Volume 2", the album was produced by Merge Records once again and consisted of eleven originals written by Deschanel and two cover tracks. The album debuted on the top of several prestigious charts such as the US Alternative, US Folk, US Indie and US Rock. It also reached the sixth position on the US Album Chart, making it the group's most successful album to date. The following years saw two more releases, A Very She & Him Christmas in 2011 and their most recent release Volume 3 in 2013. Both these records have received great reception, landing amongst the top three spots of US Alternative, US Folk, US Indie and US Rock Charts.
With singles such as "In the Sun", "Baby, Its Cold Outside" and "Never Wanted Your Love", the duo has made their mark in the music industry. To listen to your favorite hits, be sure to grab your She and Him tickets.
