Ghost - band, also known as Ghost B.C., is a heavy metal band which hails from Linköping, Sweden. Formed in 2008, the band didn't take long to gain mainstream popularity. Its debut album came out in 2010 titled Opus Eponymous but even before that, Ghost B.C. had already released a demo with 3 tracks and a vinyl with the title Elizabeth. Opus Eponymous went on to be nominated for Grammis Award and gained immense praise from the music world which seemed to be waiting for a unique band like Ghost B.C.
The band's second album hit music stores in 2013 and was titled Infestissumam. This was a major label release and proved to be even more fruitful for the band than the debut. It ranked at number one position on Swedish music charts and more importantly, went on to actually win a Grammis Award this time; in the category of 'Best Hard Rock/Metal Album'.
The story behind coming together of the band Ghost B.C. is quite interesting. All the members were a part of another band but one day one of the Nameless Ghouls played a riff that they found to be the best ever. They decided that Satanically-oriented lyrics would go best with the chorus and that's how a new band was formed. The members called it 'Ghost' and the idea behind this name was to incorporate their love of horror films into the band's music; hence started the journey of Ghost - band, which has by now established itself as a truly peculiar musical act.
The music of the band has not been put into a single category of genres but is best described as doom metal and heavy metal. One of the Nameless Ghouls referred to the band's music as a mix of death metal and pop music. Lyrics of the band's songs are satanic and seem to promote Satan worship because of which it has also had to face controversies, especially in the United States. The theme of the band is to imitate the Roman Catholic Church, promoting worship of Satan instead of the Holy Trinity.
A distinctive feature about Ghost - band, apart from their music, is their stage presence; which is eccentric to say the least. The lead vocalist dresses up as a Roman Catholic pope; only scarier with masks and spooky makeup. Other members of the band appear as creatures hidden in hooded robes. Some people have gone on to say that Ghost- band is a lot like KISS because of the costumes that the band members don and tunes that lean more towards pop than metal. The band does not like to be exposed publicly, so much that even the real names of band members are not known. The front man refers to himself as Papa Emeritus and other members are known as Nameless Ghouls. In a further attempt to keep their identity hidden, the band has a 'no pictures' policy and band members don't sign autographs. The band's fans, however, love Ghost B.C. just the way it is and faithfully come to watch it perform wherever it goes.
Ghost - band music is not for every ear. The band has a cult following which adores its music. Moreover, that legion of fans is not only limited to Sweden, it is spread in all parts of Europe and the United States. In 2011, the band performed at the Studio at Webster Hall, their first gig in NYC and the fan turnout impressed even the band members themselves.
One of the earliest live appearances of Ghost - band was in Draconian Times MMXI, the tour by gothic metal band Paradise Lost in 2011. The band came to the U.S. for the first time the same year, performing at the Maryland Deathfest. A live concert of Ghost - band is full of surprises. If not something new in its already unusual performances, the band surprises its fans with elaborate costumes and makeup. Now that it has made a name for itself in the United States, it makes a point to include it in its annual touring schedule. And the Ghost B.C. fans there make sure to buy Ghost - band tickets for the concerts, considering it a sacred commodity.
