Corgan was born on the 17th of March in 1967. He recalls that music was first introduced to him by his father, a blues guitarist. When he was fourteen years old, Corgan started to play the guitar himself. Bands such as Van Halen and Cheap Trick were his early influences.
In 1985, he created a band of his own, known as Marked. This band was a pure gothic metal group. After having performed in Chicago, the band moved to Illinois and also performed in St. Petersburg as well as in other areas. However the band did not gain much popularity and it ultimately disbanded.
Billy Corgan moved back to Chicago where he began working at a record store. It was during this time that he began forming a new band that would be known as the Smashing Pumpkins. James Iha, a guitarist and D'Arch, a bassist, became great friends with Corgan. The three musicians started to perform in small gigs in clubs and bars across Chicago. In place of a drummer, the band used a drum machine. However, a real drummer was required and Jimmy Chamberlin filled in the space for a drummer.
The Smashing Pumpkins created a muddy alternative sound by combining elements of experimental, metal and psychedelic music. After releasing a few independent singles, the band signed a record deal with Caroline Records.
Their debut album, Gish, came out in 1991. In 1993, Siamese Dream was released and by the time their third album, Mellon Collie, came out in 1995, their popularity had tremendously increased. The band was recognized as being one of the top rock bands in the mid 1990s. Corgan's exceptional songwriting skills led the band to contribute songs for Hollywood movies like Singles, Batman & Robin, Ransom, Highway and Stigmata. They also produced albums for other artists such as Catherine, Hole and Ric Ocasek. In 2000, the band split up. Fans of the band assumed that Corgan would be seen pursuing a solo career.
After having played various live shows as a guitarist/sideman with the band called New Order in 2001, Billy Corgan finally released an announcement regarding his next project. He created another band that was known as Zwan. This new band featured Chamberlin (his former band mate) on the drums along with guitarist Matt Sweeney bassist David Pajo and Pas Lenchantin. In January 2003, their debut album, Mary Star of the Sea came out. In September the band disbanded.
As a result, Billy Corgan embarked on his solo career. A year later he was performing live as a solo artist in the Chicago area. In October 2004 he successfully issued his first poetry collection with Faber and Faber called Blinking with Fists. Simultaneously he began working on his solo debut album in collaboration with Bon Harris and Bjorn Thorsrud.
In June 2005, his debut album, Future Embrace, was released. The album was quite promising and critics noted it to be quite ambitious. Guest artists that featured on the album were drummer Chamberlin and the American band Cure's, Robert Smith.
