The Beauty and the Beast Ballet is an amazing classic fairytale production with not only the dark and gothic scenes but also with some brilliant lighthearted scenes. The story revolves around in the world of goblins, fairies and sprites and reflects that beauty is more skin deep. As part of a punishment, the handsome prince is turned into an ugly prince due to his deadly arrogance. The story requires true love to break this spell and for this reason a pretty young woman is sent to live with the beast. The play becomes truly extraordinary when the young lady enters the world of the beast. She is initially afraid but then her fear soon fades away when she realizes that all she needs is to return the love that the beast desires.
Northern Ballet's adaptation of Beauty and the Beast Ballet is a mysteriously magical production where the beauty is handed over to the beast. A dramatic dancer Laverne Meyer who hails from Canada first formed a Northern Dance Theatre in 1969. Meyer took the position of the first artistic director and initially focused on classical and contemporary dance on a very small scale. With eleven dancers on hand, soon it came to win the interest and loyalty of audience. In 1976, a classical dancer named Robert de Warren replaced Laverne Meyer who first changed the name of Northern Dance Theatre into Northern Ballet Theatre. With more than twenty dancers under the company's belt, de Warren was able to stage full length classical ballets and also brand new and rediscovered creations.
The year 1987 marked the last year of directorship of Robert de Warren and therefore, Christopher Gable was positioned as the new artistic director from 1987 to 1998. He was able to attract a great deal of audience interest by staging several award winning theatrical productions that later became huge box office hits. The brilliant dancer and actor, however, passed away in 1998 but left his footprints that could be followed by the upcoming artistic directors. In 1999, a distinguished dancer and choreographer, Stefano Giannetti joined the company and worked until 2001 when the Northern Ballet was put under the directorship of David Nixon. Nixon continues to add exciting and challenging pieces to its repertoire of dance performances and has also fuelled the company's training program.
Northern Ballet is known for delivering the best classical dance and therefore stands apart from other ballet companies around the globe. The company is sailing through hard times as its funding has been cut down but its productions still remain as brilliant as ever. The company's artistic director, David Nixon has taken the latest Beauty and the Beast Ballet production to a whole new level which ensures the audience that good times are still there.
