The K-Rock Centre is a famous Canadian arena, located at 1 Tragically Hip Way in the Canadian city of Kingston, within the Ontario province. It was founded in 2006 and opened to the public in 2008. It is a public arena, falling under the City of Kingston, and is run by SMG Canada ULC. A multi-surface arena, it has a capacity of upto seven thousand, depending on the nature of the event, and is often used for hockey games, concerts and theatrical productions, thus the large number of K-Rock Centre tickets are purchased every year.
The K-Rock Centre is home to sports teams such as the Kingston Frontenacs, members of the pro ice hockey Ontario Hockey League. Known also as the Rogers K-Rock Centre, the arena’s first event was a concert by The Tragically Hip, Kingston’s very own, with the Kingston Frontenacs playing their first game a day earlier to an audience five thousand seven hundred large. They won their first game against the Peterborough Petes. The premier entertainment and sports venue in the city of Kingston, it was built to play host to concerts, ice shows, family shows and many other entertainment events.
Located on The Tragically Hip Way, in the city’s downtown area, it is near some of the best restaurants, hotels and shopping. It is also near the 401 Highway and situated at the city’s centre, perfectly accessible to anyone. The K-Rock Centre is also home to the Kingston & District Sports Hall of Fame, to which distinguished individuals are inducted. The likes of inductees include renowned NHL players such as Doug Gilmour, Kirk Muller and Bob Murray. Coach and commentator, Don Cherry, has also been inducted, as has been famous swimmer Vicki Keith.
This is a venue that plays a large role in the life of the city’s community, through a large number of events each year. As a beacon of sustainability, it has led efforts to care for the environment by recycling, amongst other ways. A number of green practices have been included in the operation of the facility, achieved a Leadership in Energy and Environment Design, LEED, silver rating and certification. Through the use of bike racks and scattered parking, the facility encourages using more environment friendly ways of transportation. The center is also home to a recycling room with green housekeeping products used, added to technology that leads to reduction in the use of water.
The venue has played host to many artists, bands and events including Vince Gill, K-Town Tri Anniversary Celebrations, Sirens for Life, Sting, Kingston Family Bike Rodeo, First Capital Cup, Disney’s Beauty & the Beast play, Kingdom Come, Science Rendezvous, Merle Haggard, Inspiration2Women, Diana Krall, Investors Group Stars on Ice, Sustainable Kingston Community Forum, Volunteers Grow Community Awards, Carrie Underwood, Billy Talent, OHL Playoffs, Marianas Trench, WWE Raw and the Tragically Hip, among others.
