The orchestra was founded in 1965 as Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. The idea behind the formation of this group was the revival of music in the Canadas capital at the time when the city and its music lovers were experiencing a dry spell in orchestral music.
Later in 1976, the orchestra adopted its current name. Before the age of old Ottawa Philharmonic would come to an end, this particular group revived it and made it more popular than it ever was. Under the leadership of Maurice Haycock and support of local musicians, the orchestra emerged as an irresistible force that truly kept up with the musical traditions of Ottawa.
It was on April 14, 1966, when the orchestra did their first performance at the Ottawa Technical High School. This was the start and the rest is history. Today, after forty years of its inception the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra has become synonym to musical entertainment in Canada and the world over.
The Orchestra plays five major concerts in a year in Southam Hall of the National Arts Centre. Besides this, they perform in various countries like USA, Germany, England, France, Bohemia and Russia.
The famous orchestra has performed with choirs including the Cantata Singers of Ottawa and the Ottawa Choral Society, under the baton of Clifford Hunt (1965-66), Nicholas Goldschmidt (1966-67), James Coles (1969-75) and Brian Law (1975-91), among others.
Their performances at different festivals are a treat to watch as they present the best of music to the listeners. Till now, the orchestra has given many splendid performances. One of the recent ones that really rocked everyone was in early 2008 at Spring Festival Gala of Chinese Arts and Music.
Here the Ottawa musicians collaborated with the Master of String from China, Ms. Jiang Kemei, in a musical tribute that will win the hearts and souls of the entire audience.
