Collected Stories is a popular play that explores the relationship between a successful short story writer and her protegee student. It was written by the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Donald Margulies. It was first performed in 1996 at the South Coast Repertory in California and became an immediate success. In addition to being performed in various cities across the US, it has also been featured at an international level in countries such as Tokyo, Sydney, and Vienna. Collected Stories has won many awards and has earned the honor of being a Pulitzer Prize finalist. It can prove to be a source of real entertainment for both authors and aspiring writers alike. Set in an apartment in Greenwich Village that is filled with books from top to bottom, it is presented in six scenes that cover the years of their relationship.
The plot revolves around Ruth Steiner and Lisa Morrison, the two protagonists of this drama. Ruth Steiner is a well established writer based in New York who meets a young ambitious writer named Lisa Morrison. Lisa is an inexperienced graduate student, but she is talented and Ruth Steiner decides to train and mentor her. Lisa Morrison becomes Ruth's assistant to learn the ropes from her, and in the course of six years they become fast friends. Lisa achieves her goal of becoming a successful writer, but their relationship soon begins to disintegrate. It is also a tale of trust, betrayal, and unavoidable issues of age, and the ups and downs of a friendship. Collected Stories strikes a fine balance between drama and comedy.
The roles of Ruth Steiner and Lisa Morrison are played by Linda Lavin and Sarah Paulson, both of whom are accomplished actresses. Linda Lavin is a multi-award winning actress who won the Tony Award for her performance in theatre. She has also received a number of nominations and awards in prestigious academies and ceremonies such as Emmy Awards, Tony Awards, and Golden Globes. Sarah Paulson has a rich acting experience in both theatre and motion pictures. Donald Margulies, the playwright of this drama, is a professor of English literature in the US. He teaches at Yale University and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for one of his plays called Dinner with Friends in 2000. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and received the Sidney Kingsley Award in 2000. South Coast Repertory commissioned, produced, and hosted Collected Stories in 1996. Lisa Peterson directed all six scenes of the play, and featured the performance off-Broadway at the Manhattan Theatre Club the following year. The next productions of Collected Stories were presented at the Lucille Lortel Theatre and Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles from 1998 to 1999. It was a major success and won the Los Angeles Ovation Award for Best Production of a Play. Howard Davies directed the play in 2000 and hosted it at the Royal Haymarket Theatre. Shakespeare and Company produced it in 2001, and it was later adapted into a film which was aired by PBS. It is premiering on Broadway at the Manhattan Theatre Club this year.
