The Rhode Island Rams is the athletics program of the University of Rhode Island. It is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference and is a member of the NCAA Division I. Some of the franchises play in the Colonial Athletic Association. The program is lead by Thorr Bjorn, as the athletics director, with the university itself located at Kingston in Rhode Island. It is home to ten women's teams and eight men's teams. The football teams play at the Meade Stadium with the basketball teams playing at the Ryan Center. The baseball teams play at the Bill Beck Field with the soccer teams playing at the URI Soccer Complex. The Rhode Island Rams mascot is Rhody the Ram with the teams in the program often nicknamed as the Rams. Their official colors are white, navy blue and keaney blue. The football team is the only team that plays in the NCAA's FCS Colonial Athletic Association since the Atlantic 10 Conference does not hold football championships. Women's teams exist in basketball, cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis and volleyball. During the nineties, the Rhode Island Rams basketball team, made it to the NCAA Tournament three times consecutively; in 1997, 1998 and 1999, appearing in the Elite 8, the eight top basketball teams in the US as per the NCAA Tournament. The baseball teams are coached by Frank Leoni and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2005. They have a fierce rivalry with the North Carolina Tar Heels, who share many similar features to them, such as having mascots that pay homage to their agricultural heritage and identical official colors.
