The NHRA Sonoma Nationals is one of the highlights of the association’s annual calendar. As the foremost drag racing governing body, the NHRA has in excess of eighty thousand drivers on its panel which ranks it among the biggest motorsport bodies in the world. The association was formed in the year 1951 by racing and motorsport enthusiast Wally Parks in order to turn motorsports, especially drag racing professional. Four years down the line the NHRA staged its debut sanctioned event at the Great Bend in Kansas. The sport has come a long way since as the NHRA now holds twenty two events the year around as part of its Nationals series.
The rules of the sport have evolved over the years as well to make it a more compelling viewing experience. It is basically a simple acceleration contest between two drivers to drive in a straight line to cross the finishing line before the other. The track on which the race is held is also known as the dragstrip. Every race is based on an elimination format where if you lose, you are out. There are no second chances so every driver has to step up to the plate immediately. The winner moves on to the next stage and the process carries on till there is only one racer left who is then given a trophy commonly known as Wally in honor of the inventor of the NHRA Wally Parks. Every race is started by an electronic device called the Christmas Tree due to the different colors of the lights on its panel. The tree has two amber lights right at the top which are followed by three bigger LED lights, a green light and a red one, all in descending order. Each side of the tree has these lights in the same structure.
The tree is wired to a couple of light beams across the starting line which is connected to the trackside photocells which in turn are wired to the Tree along with an electronic timer. As soon as a car hits the first light ray/beam that tells everyone that the vehicle is exactly seven inches away from the starting line. The stage beam is then hit by the driver which means that the front tires of the car are positioned exactly on top of the starting line. The focus then shifts to the amber lights on the Christmas Tree and when they lit up that is a sign for the racers to step on the pedal and go for the win. Speed and the elapsed time are the two things that are measured to determine the winner of a race. If a racer crossed the starting line too quickly or does anything that gives him an unfair advantage he is automatically disqualified.
