It is not clear what the inspiration behind the term "Oulaws" was. Some link it to the fact that when Sprint Car Racing began they were not many rules devised hence the name Outlaws emerged for them. Another presumption is that USAC( United States Auto Club), the ruling body of Sprint Car Racing in 1970s demanded appropriate permits to allow drivers to race. Those who did not have the permit were cast as Outlaws and at that time the best drivers were the Outlaws.
World of Outlaws history can be traced back to 1978. It was initiated by Ted Johnson who set forth a schedule and the rules for the games that would determine the champions of the series. He wanted a national series that was open to all and did not have very rigid permit policies. Ted came up with a point system to evaluate the winning driver.
Jimmy Boyd emerged as the winner of the first race at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas and it was his only victory in the series history. The champion of the series was Steve Kinser, a name that stands out in the history of the series for the impressive wins he accumulated in his career. He not only dominated the series but went on to win around 20 championships. The series champion for 2010 and 2012 is Jason Meyers.
