In North America, it is the oldest existing and functioning minor league franchise. In order to honor the former National Hockey League players, Hartford Whalers, the franchise changed the name to 'Connecticut Whale' in 2010. They reverted back to their name once the 2012-13 AHL season finished. Wolf Pack is ranked among the top associations of the New York Rangers of NHL. Jim Schoenfeld is the General Manager of the team and Ken Gernander is the Head Coach.
Associated members of the American Hockey League, the Springfield Falcons are a team of professional hockey players. They are ranked among top associates of the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League. The Falcons play their home games at the MassMutual Center. Two main rivals of the Falcon include Providence Bruins and Hartford Wolf Pack. The franchise was formed in 1994 when it was relocated to Worcester, Massachusetts to become the 'Worcester IceCats'. Over the years the Falcons successfully secured a bond with the Winnipeg Jets and Hartford Whalers belonging to the National Hockey League. As the Indians have their ties going back in time with Whalers', they were able to secure majority of the players who previously played in Springfield. The team is led by head coach Brad Larsen and Captain Ryan Craig.
