Crowne Plaza Invitational tournament has been regularly played since its debut in 1946 and the venue has remained the same, initially it was called Colonial National Invitation. Crowne Plaza is the world famous Hotel chain that currently sponsors this event and before them Bank of America was the official sponsor. The game format is stroke play and the length of the field is 7204 yards. Colonial Club is located in Forth Worth Texas and the golf course is located just northwest of Texas Christian University on the south bank of the clear fork of Trinity River. Apart from Crowne Plaza Invitational this course has hosted major events like U.S Women‘s Open, Tournament Players Championship and U.S Open.
 
Crowne Plaza Invitational is a unique golf event as it honors history of golf by adopting a plaid, Scottish tartan jacket, which is worn by top committee chairmen and the tournament champions. One interesting thing to note is that at the starting first there is a wall of champions, the score and name of each champion of the tournament since 1941 is engraved on this wall. This tournament is also termed as the longest running PGA event that is non-major. Prize money for the winner is $1,116,000 and the total purse for the tournament is $6,200,000. The player invitation list is kind of restricted and only first 80 players from the previous year’s money list get the chance to compete.
 
This tournament is one of the five golf events that have been given by the PGA Tour an “invitational” status. It has reduced number of players up to 125 as compared to the other regular tournaments in which the number can go up to 156. Invitational tournaments have more freedom to judge which players will be eligible to take part in the event and along with this there is no open qualifying in these tournaments. Some other invitational golf tournaments are The Heritage and Memorial Tournament. One more interesting tradition of this event is that every year former tournament champions select two deserving talented young players to compete in the event. Pro Players like Curtis Strange, Davis Love and Al Geiberger have played in this tournament as Champion’s Choice.
 
Famous golfer and Fort Worth resident Ben Hogan holds the record of most wins in this tournament, he won it five times. Some other world class players that have won this tournament are Jack Nicklaus, Corey Pavin, Sergio Garcia, Nick Price and Phil Mickelson.
