For the fans of college men’s ice hockey in Boston, it doesn’t get any better than Boston Beanpot Championship. Boston Beanpot Championship features ice hockey men’s college teams from four of the top universities in Boston and pit them up against each other on the ice rink for bragging rights as well as the championship trophy. With the arena being full of the supporters of these colleges, the competition can’t get any fiercer and competitive than this. The Boston Beanpot Championship took place for the first time in 1952-53 season and since then the competitors have always been Boston College Eagles, Boston University Terriers, Harvard University Crimson and Northeastern University Huskies. With twenty nine wins, Terriers lead the pack they followed by Eagles with seventeen wins, then Crimson with ten wins and lastly Huskies with four wins. In the most recent encounter that was held in 2012, Boston College Eagles came out victorious making it their third consecutive win.
The first ever Boston Beanpot Championship took place in December 1952 at the Boston Arena. The following year, the even didn’t take place while in 1954 and 1955 it took place in the month of January. Ever since 1956, the championship tournament is held during the month of February with an exception for the year 1978. This was due to the Blizzard of 1978, when all the fans and players got stuck in the Garden following a heavy snow fall. Due to that the consolation as well as the championship game took place on March 1. As of the moment, the tournament is being held at the TD Garden since 1996, however prior to that it was staged at the old Boston Garden arena. Even though in the women’s Beanpot, Northeastern and Harvard has the dominating lead, but in Men’s Beanpot, Boston University and Boston College have been dominating. During the early years of the tournament, Boston College dominated the Boston Beanpot Championship by winning eight championships out of thirteen, and Boston University just took one while four went to Harvard University. However Boston University’s fortunes changed since 1966, and out of forty seven tournaments, Terriers claimed twenty eight Beanpots. As for the Huskies, the team had to wait up until 1980 to claim its first ever Beanpot. The team’s first win came when Huskies’ Wayne Turner scored a goal for the team against Boston College to claim victory. Since then, Turner’s goal scoring shot has been known in the history of Huskies as the most important goal. After winning the first title in 1980s, Huskies claimed three more titles in 80s and went into the championship drought since 1988.
