Atalanta BC traces its roots back to the year 1907. The region of Bergamo already had its football club which was formed three years earlier in 1904. That team was incepted by rich immigrants from Switzerland and was known as “FC Bergamo.” Atalanta then came on to scene. The sport’s governing body FIGC first recognized the team in the year 1914.
The team that plays currently came into existence after a merger between Atalanta and another football club known as “Bergamasca.” The team began to play in its traditional blue, white and black uniform for the first time in 1924. The away kit of blue and white was adapted that same year too.
Atalanta BC plays its home games at the famous “Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia” stadium, a ground they moved to in the 1928. The club became a part of the Italian football league structure a year after that move. It took Atalanta another eight years to reach the top tier of Italian football. That stint however didn’t last too long and the club was relegated to the second division.
The club bounced back in 1940 and remained a part of the Serie A all the way till 1959. Atalanta BC spent one year in Serie B and made their way back to the first division immediately. The team was once again demoted to the second tier in 1973. The years since have been spent in both the top and the lower divisions by the club. Its latest promotion to Serie A occurred in 2010-2011 campaign.
Between all these highs and lows Atalanta managed to lift the prestigious “Coppa Italia” in 1963. The club also made it to the semifinals of the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in the year 1988 and that too when it was a member of the Serie B. Cardiff City is the only football club apart from Atalanta who has gone so far in a European competition when it wasn’t even a part of the top tier of domestic football.
