Club America was founded in 1916 and is among the four football clubs under the ownership of the media company Groupo Televisa. The club plays its home games at Estadio Azteca, which is the biggest stadium in Mexican boundaries as well as in Latin America. With a seating capacity of over a hundred thousand, the facility has also been marked as the second biggest football stadium of the world. Club America is one of Mexico's most successful teams and has won various international and domestic titles. They hold eleven record-setting national titles alongside eight international trophies, which are recognized by FIFA. Of all the clubs belonging to the CONCACAF region, none has yet achieved this much success with the exception of Etoile de Sahel, Santos FC and Olimpia. In addition, the team has brought home five CONCACAF Champions' Cups, a CONCACAF Giants Cup and two Copa Interamericana. In 1993, the team was a runner-up for the CONCACAF Champions' Cup but lost the final game against Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa. This was one of the most upsetting defeats in the team's history.
Leon has been consistently contending for the title of Primera Division A since its relegation from the Division in 2002.
