Keith Sweat is an American R&B and soul artist who is most renowned for his work in the New Jack Swing genre. New Jack Swing, or swingbeat as it is sometimes called, is a fusion between the rhythms, samples and the production technique of hip hop, with the contemporary/urban sound of R&B. Sweat has brought some interesting innovations to the genre, and that has made him the leading proponent of the art.
Sweat started his music career in 1975, with a band called “Jamilah”, for whom he was the lead singer. Swear left the band after mastering the art of being a front man, and started performing in night clubs throughout New York City. He was discovered by an agent and was offered a recording contract. Keith Sweat signed with Elektra Records in 1987.
Since 1987, Sweat has released eleven studio albums. His first album Make it Last Forever was a success mostly due to the hit song “I Want Her”. The song is credited for inaugurating the New Jack Swing era and was a number one hit on the R&B charts. Sweat's second album I'll Give All My Love to You gave him his first top ten on the Billboard 200 chart. Following a number of successful releases, Sweat's numbers on the charts started going down, and his seventh album Didn't See Me Coming, was the first to not have a Top 40 hits on the charts. However, Sweat bounced back strongly with his album Rebirth, which brought him back into the charts. His latest albums, Just Me, Ridin Solo and Til the Morning have been moderate successes, with the latter climbing into the top 40 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The second headliner on the bill for the Summer Jam is the dynamic R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! The group was at the height of its popularity during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The most well known lineup of the band consisted of Dwayne Wiggins, Raphael Saadiq and Timothy Christian Riley.
The band released four albums during their golden years. Their first album “Who?”, released in 1988, was an R&B record. It garnered significant critical acclaim and was commercially successful as well. The album went on to be certified gold and spawned several successful singles, including the number one hit Little Walter. Other Top 10 hits from the album include Born Not To Know, For The Love Of You and Baby Doll.
The group capitalized on the platform their first album afforded them and produced the platinum hit, “The Revival” in 1990. Their second album produced several R&B number ones, including The Blues, Whatever You Want, Feels Good and It Never Rains In Southern California. Feels Good also gave them their first Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
Released in 1993, their third album “Sons of Soul” was the band's most successful to date, and went on to be certified as double platinum. It spawned the hit singles If I Had No Loot, Anniversary and (Lay Your Head On My) Pillow.
The Group disbanded after their fourth and last album, 1996's House of Music. Despite not containing the strong singles some of their earlier work had contained, the album still went on to be certified platinum. It is often considered by critics to be their best work to date.
Following their disbanding, Tony! Toni! Toné! got back together in 1998 with the lineup including Amar Khalil, Sam Bostic and Mac Arthur. The new line up started touring properly in 2003 and can now be seen performing at major venues all over the country.
