This concert, fully known as Evening of Doo Wop with Bobby Rydell, The Duprees and Kenny Vance & Planotones, will be headlined by some of the best known names in Doo Wop and rock n' roll. It is set to be held at the famous St George Theater, located at Staten Island, New York. For the concert, Triple Header Evening of Rock Roll tickets are already on sale, so book them now for a chance to see The Duprees sing once again.
St George Theater, the venue for the show, was finished in 1929. It was built by Solomon Brill and is one of the finest pieces of architecture on Staten Island. It was designed by Eugene DeRosa, assisted by James Whitford, the so-called dean of Staten Island architects. Originally built as a movie theater and part of the vaudeville circuit, the first movie to be shown at the theater was So This Is College. It has since then played host to the likes of Guy Lombardo, Kate Smith and Al Jolson. The venue became a theater in 2004, after a group led by Rosemary Cappozalo and her daughters saved it from being demolished. Since then, numerous acts and bands have played at the theater. These include Tony Bennett, K.D. Lang, David Cassidy, Davy Jones, The B-52's, Art Garfunkel, Diana Ross and even the Jonas Brothers.
At the Triple Header Evening of Rock Roll concert, The Duprees will also be performing on this stage. This American vocal group is renowned for its doo-wop music, for which it gained much fame and acclaim during the sixties. The band was founded in Jersey City, New Jersey by fellow students at the William L. Dickinson High School. The original members, Michael Arnone, John Salvato, Joe Santollo, Tom Bialoglow and lead singer Joey Vann were then signed onto Coed Records, owned by George Paxton. The band's first song was a cover of a Jo Safford song and charted in the top ten in 1962.
The Duprees would go on to release a mind blowing forty plus hit singles during the sixties, including covers of Gone with the Wind songs and original music. The group also released a number of albums and continues to perform today at some of the best known venues in the US.
Bobby Rydell, who will join The Duprees on stage at the Triple Header concert, is an American singer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who is known for his rock and roll music. He is also an actor and plays the drums. Rydell has been active in the American music industry since 1958 and has released music through record labels such as Columbia Records, Capitol Records and Reprise Records. He rose to fame in the early sixties as a teen idol and has gone on to release numerous hit songs.
Kenny Vance and the Planotones hail from Brooklyn, New York City and have been playing rock music since 1990. Their songs and albums have been released mostly by United Artists Records and were founded by Kenny Vance of the Jay and the Americans fame. The band's members today are Kenny Vance himself, Kurt 'Frenchy' Yahjan, Johnny Gale, Jimmy Bense, Tony Gallino and Chip Degaard.
Amazingly, the band began as a fictional band for the movie, American Hot Wax, which premiered in 1978. This fictional version was made up of Bruce Sudano, Kenny Vance, Joe Esposito and Ed Hokenson; Kenny Vance playing with members of the Brooklyn Dreams. After Kenny Vance left Jay and the Americans, he decided to form the original band, which has since then gone on to play a lot of rock and roll and doo-wop music.
You can hear the band live, along with all the performers by buying Triple Header Evening of Rock Roll tickets.
