Established in 1996 by Aaron P. Dworkin as a nonprofit entity, Sphinx Organization has been providing training services and holding contests to appreciate and promote music diversity. The organization has several in-house orchestras and ensembles that consist of music veterans, orchestra professional and fresh African-American and Latino musicians. Some of these ensembles include Sphinx Symphony, Harlem Quartet, Sphinx Virtuosi and Catalyst Quartet. From time to time these groups tour and perform with musicians from around the world.
Sphinx Symphony is made up of talented musicians and professionals who play a vast range of musical instruments. Apart from in-house talent, instrumentalists from popular orchestras like New York Philharmonic, Puerto Rico Symphonies and Los Angeles Philharmonic come and perform with Sphinx Symphony. With years of experience, they provide guidance to the in-training musicians as well as perform during the annual Sphinx Competition.
One of the main services offered by the organization is the Sphinx Competition that is held on annual basis. This contest serves as an excellent opportunity for the fresh African-American and Latino musicians to showcase their talent in front of the world-renowned musicians. The winners of the competition get prize money and they are also given the chance to tour with the ensembles. Through this their talent is channelized in the best possible way.
The in-house ensembles like Catalyst and Harlem Quartet include the top laureate and first-place winners of the Sphinx Competition. These musicians perform on a professional level and work with international musicians to present the classic works of historic musicians and composers. They also train the young musicians and help them hone their skills with different instruments. These Quartets also perform at famous orchestra halls throughout the state.
Holding a strong agenda, Sphinx Organization offers multiple educational and outreach programs to empower classical musicians. It also makes efforts to promote classical music education in different institutions of the country. Some of these programs are School Dayz, Sphinx Performance Academy, Sphinx Preparatory Institute and Musical Encounters. These programs involve children studying at elementary level and above to engage in learning different orchestral instruments.
Mainly targeted at kids, Musical Encounters visits community centers and school to familiarize kids with the instruments and also perform to enhance their interest. On the other hand, Sphinx Performance Academy (SPA) is a full-scholarship based wing that helps teenagers and youngsters to learn classical instruments and take their first step to become professionals.
The Sphinx Virtuosi, also known as the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra, is a conductor-less orchestra that consists of winners and alumni of the Sphinx Competition. The ensemble is widely known for bringing in world-class talent and also for their technique of playing flawlessly. The group has been acclaimed by the music critics and also attended by thousands of audiences whenever it has played in different orchestras. The ensemble plays vintage oeuvres created by the musicians such as Mozart, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, Piazzolla and many others.
The soloists included within the ensemble take their turns on the repertoire that ranges from violin to bass to viola to cello. Their mastery and synchronization technique makes them first-rated group. The Virtuosi has been taking its shows to different venues around the state and as part of this year's tour, the ensemble returns to Carnegie Hall. With Sphinx Organization tickets in your hand, you can listen to some heartwarming compositions and opuses created by the ensemble.
