Piper Kerman is a famous American writer, memoirist and author on whose life and experiences the popular TV series; Orange Is the New Black is based. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she studied at Smith College. Her book, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison follows the tale of how federal agents came knocking on her door when she was leading a happy life with a successful career. They accused her of a crime she had committed when she was a fresh graduate. She was then imprisoned in a correctional facility. With her experience there, she came up with her bestseller book, which sheds light on a women's prison. The TV series based on these memoirs stars Taylor Schilling, Michael J. Harney, Laura Prepon and Kate Mulgrew.

So far, one season of the TV series has been aired with Jenji Kohan and Liz Friedman as the executive producers. It is distributed by Netflix and aired on many channels.
