Piper Kerman is a famous American writer, memoirist and author on whose life and experiences the popular TV series; Orange Is the New Black is based. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she studied at Smith College. After graduating from Smith College in 1992, she got involved in unfortunate events and began laundering money for the drug dealing and trafficking operation. In 1998, she was arrested and then charged with drug trafficking and money laundering. Her subsequent imprisonment and her experiences have resulted in a much popular memoir and TV series. Her prison sentence started in 2004 and she spent thirteen months at the FCI Danbury minimum security prison in Danbury, Connecticut. Her experience in the prison turned into the best-selling memoir, "Orange is the New Black", which was published in 2010. Today, she works for nonprofit organizations as a communications strategist. Piper Kerman's book and her experiences in prison were adapted by Emmy Award winning creator, Jenji Kohan into the television drama series Orange is the New Black, which premiered at Netflix in 2013. In the series, Kerman is played by Taylor Schilling with her character named as Piper Chapman. The series; second season is set to be aired in 2014.

Piper Kerman is often invited to deliver speech to students studying law, gender and women's studies, sociology, criminology, and creative writing. She has also spoken to federal probation officers, American Correctional Association's Disproportionate Minority Confinement Task Force, justice reform advocates and volunteers, public defenders, book clubs, and current as well as former prisoners. Today, she is a communications consultant who works with nonprofits, public interest organizations and philanthropies and is actively involved in criminal justice reform. She has worked with the Open Society Foundations, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Ford Foundation, amongst others.
Her book, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison follows the tale of how federal agents came knocking on her door when she was leading a happy life with a successful career. They accused her of a crime she had committed when she was a fresh graduate. She was then imprisoned in a correctional facility. With her experience there, she came up with her bestseller book, which sheds light on a women's prison. The TV series based on these memoirs stars Taylor Schilling, Michael J. Harney, Laura Prepon and Kate Mulgrew.
So far, one season of the TV series has been aired with Jenji Kohan and Liz Friedman as the executive producers. It is distributed by Netflix and aired on many channels. The show is produced by Lionsgate Television and is now being renewed for a second season. It has received rave reviews from the press, critics and viewers.
