Since the beginning, Catholics have believed in three forms of meditation namely joyful, glorious and sorrowful mysteries. The inclusion of Luminous Mysteries introduced by Pope John Paul II in 2002 presented with a written work comprising five sections and featuring cheerful dance like as well as mellow tunes culminated into a joyful rhythmic celebration towards the end. 'Mysteries of Dark and Light' is the new piano and orchestra composition of James MacMillan that is inspired by the Catholic mysteries. According to the pianist, the work is aimed at reviving the ancient practice of writing based on Rosary. Besides Catholic faith, the Scottish pianist's music also carries influences of Scottish heritage with a strong connection to Celtic folk that further carries influences from Scandinavian, Eastern European, and far Eastern music. Cheap Mysteries of Dark and Light tickets are available for this rich and unique piece of music art.
The set of meditations brought forth by John Paul II are the basis of the five parts of the piano concert by James McMillan. The musical language differs from the conventional liturgical form; rather it flows in a dramatic tone poem like manner. The unique fusion of religious faith and symphonic poem incorporated into a piano concert is a work not many composers dare to undertake. The names of the five divisions are Baptisma Tesu Christi, Miraculum in Cana, Proclamatio Regni Dei, Transfiguratio Domini Nostri, Institutio Eucharistiae.
In the first part, the McMillan exhibits his exceptional piano playing through a bunch of plainsongs coupled with the sound of a ringing bell. During the second half, the pace of music keeps fluctuating keeping the overall atmosphere joyful and celebratory. After an initial piano and trumpet play in the first two half respectively, the third section of the musical composition is kept rather clam and melodious with lower notes which create a framework for the following section. In the fourth part, the music begins on a lighter lower note and slowly gains momentum and thrill. The last stage is a joyful dance-like rhythmic celebration that changes course with a liberating solo piano act by David McMillian.
Although, today the people's affiliation with Rosary may be slowly fading away, many would still be familiar with the symbolism and references quoted and incorporated by MacMillan. However, in order to enjoy or take pleasure in this musical amalgamation, one need not necessarily have a solid knowledge of the connections that it makes as the performance itself communicates and carries a whole body of meaning and feelings to it. The concert further presents or challenges the audience to listen and accept the collaborating effort of two distinct styles of music together, that is the piano and the orchestra. The sound of the piano is enhanced, boosted and further beautified by the vibraphones, chimes and other orchestra instruments. The synthesis of the two music genres is a challenging task that is mastered by David McMillian and the orchestra ensemble.
'Mysteries of Dark and Light' flows through various colors and incidents during its performance. It is one of the most challenging acts ever undertaken in the music world and is therefore becoming known as a musical masterpiece especially in the piano-orchestra directory.
