A three-time Grammy Award and five-time Latin Grammy Award winner, Joan Sebastian is a popular Mexican singer and songwriter.

Joan is noted for producing a kind of music that features a mixture of Ranchera, Latin pop, and grupera music. He is one of the most famous singers and songwriters Mexico has, while his versatility has helped him remain in the popular taste of the public.

Joan as composed hundreds of pop songs since his career began in 1977. However, his success is not only found in music but also in his acting career.

Joan Sebastian was born in Juliantla, Guerrero in 1951. When he turned eight, he was sent to Guanajuato for school. Joan was later sent off to a monastery in Morelos. He stayed there under the care of father David Salgado.

Upon realizing that music was his true calling, Joan Sebastian dedicated himself completely to the music business. He was 17 then. For some time, he made a living as an administrative assistant in a resort in Oaxtepec, Morelos.

It was in that resort when Joan Sebastian pursued his singing dream more aggressively. In 1968, Joan encountered a famous Mexican actress Angelica Maria. She suggested him to record the songs and gave him the telephone number of Eduardo Magallanes.

Magallanes was the then known music producer. Sebastian moved to Mexico City and eventually succeeded getting a contract by Chucho Rincon from Discos Capitals. This began Sebastian's artistic career. His first disc was released to the positive views. It sold 12 thousand copies.

In 1997, Sebastian stopped using his legal name Jose Manuel Figueroa and picked up his artistic name Joan Sebastian. That year also saw him moving to music label Musart who released his new disc El Camino del Amor.

The album proved to be a great hit, selling over 1, 27,000 copies. El Camino del Amor also reached audiences in the United States and South America. Joan released thirty-two albums afterwards and all were more successful than the previous.

In 2000, Joan Sebastian came up with Secreto de Amor which sold over 1 million copies. That year also saw receiving The Silver Pen Award. As recognition of his career, Joan Sebastian received the prestigious award Premio Lo Nuestro a la Musica Latina in 2001. In 2003, he received the Songwriter of the universe Award at the 11th Annual El Premio ASCAP.

Since the beginning of his career, Joan Sebastian has released an array of albums. Some were released to critical acclaim while some received average reviews. Sebastian released Rumores in 1985; Oiga in 1987; Ranchero, Vol. 2 in 1987; Mascarada in 1988; Norte?o in 1989; Viva La Vida in 1991; Al Rojo Vivo, Bandido De Amores, Con Mariachi Musart, Con Tambora 1, Con Tambora 2, Con Tambora 3, Embustero, En Vivo En La Arena Mexico, Mis Nuevas Baladas, Norte?o Vol. 2, and Peor De Tus Antojos in 1995.

Joan Sebastian later came up with Tu Y Yo in 1996, Disco De Oro Vol.1 Baladas in 1997, Gracias Por Tanto Amor in 1998, Rey Del Jaripeo in 1999; Con Norte?o, Nostalgia Y Recuerdos, Secreto De Amor in 2000; Cari?o Como Tu, Con Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan, En Vivo Desde La Plaza Del Progreso De Guadalajara, Joan Sebastian Y Antonio Aguilar Vol. 2 in 2001; Afortunado, Con Mariachi, Dijo El Corazon in 2002; Enamorado Del Amor, Frente A Frente Con Banda, Mujeres Bonitas, Poeta Del Pueblo, Que Amarren A Cupido in 2004; and Inventario, Rancheras Con Banda in 2005.

Joans recent albums include Canta Para Ti, De Relajo Pa Bailar, En Vivo En El Auditorio Nacional, Joan Sebastian, Mas Alla Del Sol released in 2006; Corridos Y Algo Mas, No Es De Madera, and Siempre Romantico came out in 2007.
