Walker, whose real name is actually Ronald Clyde Crosby, is mostly linked to the outlaw progressive country music scene in Austin Texas during the 1970s. The era dedicated to names such as Guy Clark, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Billie Joe Shaver, Townes Van Zandt and the Lost Gonzo Band also nurtured Walker as a musician and enabled him to make a name for himself in the presence of the already existent big shots in the industry.
Surprisingly Walker was not even born in Texas yet that is the place which he now calls home and where he found most of the success and fame in his musical career. He was in fact born in the city of New York in 1942. He spent his early days as a musician there and also recorded his first few albums before moving to Austin in 1971.
Walker’s debut album was released with the band Circus Maximus in 1967 for Vanguard and so was his second album. However, after that the band dissolved and Jerry Jeff Walker took this opportunity to release his first solo album named ‘Mr. Bojangles’ for Atco Records in 1968. Though the album itself did not make it to any music charts but the single ‘Mr. Bojangles’ secured the 77th position on the US Music charts and also at number 51 on the RPM Top Singles chart in Canada. Later, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band came up with their own version of the song which was even more successful than Walker’s original release and made it to the Top Ten of 1971’s pop charts.
The maestro’s biggest success came with his 1973 album Viva Terlingua which he recorded with the Lost Gonzo Band in the town of Luckenbach. The album received Gold certification and also four and a half stars from Allmusic. It also went on to become Walker’s largest selling album and established him as one of the leading country music singers of the industry. From that time onwards, there was no turning back for Walker. He then released a series of albums under different popular recording labels such as MCA, Warner Bros., T&TM, Sawdust Records, Hip-O Records and Elektra. At present, the artist has a total of 37 albums and 13 singles to his name. Many of his singles have found their place on the US Top 100 Country Music charts and so have most of his albums.
Moreover, not only are his songs timeless hits but his on-stage performances are also entertaining and memorable. Time has had no effect on his passion for music and even at the age of 71, Walker still brings energy in his performances just as he did when he started his career. This quality sets him apart from the other musicians of his era and is what makes his shows a must watch for all music lovers.
