Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks is the second annual winter concert to be held at the open-air Red Rocks Amphitheatre, sponsored by Monster Energy and featuring artists Ryan Lewis and Macklemore. The former is a renowned music producer, music video director, musician, rapper, DJ, photographer and graphic designer based in Seattle. He is best recognized for his collaborations with Macklemore with whom he produced Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, The Heist, The VS. EP and some singles. From the start of their collaboration in 2008, the artist has engineered, recorded, produced, mixed music as well as director the videos of Same Love, Otherside (Remix), Thrift Shop and And We Danced. Macklemore has worked with other musicians including trumpet-player Owour Arunga, and violinist Andrew Joslyn. He has been independently releasing music since 2000, following which he has built a huge online fan base. The artist has issued three EPs, two albums and a mixtape in the absence of support from a major label. His music video of the track Thrift Shop has received more than fifty-eight million views on YouTube. Macklemore and Lewis released their debut studio album called The Heist in October 2012, right away appearing on the number one spot on US iTunes download charts, while taking the second place on US Billboard 200 charts. The record sold seventy-eight thousand copies in its initial week. Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks tickets are a sought-after treat among hip hop fans who look forward to watching the two put up a great show side by side.
Red Rocks Amphitheatre, where the Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks is being held, is a rock structure close to Morrison, Colorado, providing a perfect concert space and ambiance. The venue has ahuge titled rock shaped like a disc, angling outwards from the right stage, and it can entertain up to more than nine thousand people. It has been the popular venue for making videos and for live recordings. During the seventies and eighties, local folk rock singer John Denver recorded many of concerts at the spot; U2 filmed its concert video here in 1983, called Live at Red Rocks; Stevie Nick, singer of Fleetwood Mac recorded a sixty-minute long DVD of a concert here. In 1992, Moody Blues played live here alongside a symphony orchestra which was to appear on a PBS special called Live at Red Rocks. Many other recognized acts have performed at the Red Rocks including the likes of Depeche Mode, Mumford & Sons, Kenny Chesney, Grace Potter, The Allman Brothers, Ben Harper, R.E.M. Coldplay, Phish, and A Perfect Circle.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis who are preparing for their appearance at Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks show, have created several hit singles such as My Oh My, Wing$, Same Love, and Shop Thrift, all of which were featured on The Heist. Among these the latter most turned out to be the most successful, peaking at number one on charts in New Zealand, Australia, and on United States’ rap and R&B charts. It also became popular in other European countries including France and Germany. For their EP The VS, the two performed the songs Vipassa, Crew Cuts, Life is Cinema, Otherside, Kings, Irish Celebration and The End. Their next EP, The VS. Redux, featured almost twice as many tunes including Vipassa (remix), Crew Cuts (Remix), Otherside (feat Fences), Irish Celebration (PSmoov remix), The End (Budo Remix), The Town (Sabzi Remix), Stay Home Dade and Fake Empire.
Macklemore has performed at several music festivals such as Bumbershoot (Seattle music and art festival), Sasquatch Music Festival, Outside Lands Music Festival, Rock the Bells, and Lollapalooza, and among many others. In May 2012, the two artists played at the Sun God Festival in the University of California. Their presence brought more crowd energy than that of Chiddy Bang, Silversun Pickups, Ra Ra Riots, and Murs.
