Falu was born in Mumbai and started learning music at a very early age. She was associated with the famous traditional Indian music family called Jaipur Gharana. She received rigorous music and singing training from the legendary singer and sarangi maestro, Sultan Khan. At one time, she was practicing music for almost sixteen hours a day. In 2000, she moved to the US and joined a Boston based Indo-American band, Karyshmam. During this time she also performed in nationwide shows with Asian Massive leader, Karsh Kale. She was also working as a visiting Indian music lecturer at Tufts University. After two years of lectureship she eventually moved to New York and formed her own band by the name of Falu. Right after forming this band, Falu started doing live shows across New York City.
Falu got mainstream attention when in 2004 she was invited as a soloist to perform with world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The very next year Carnegie Hall appointed her as one of the Musical Ambassadors to New York City. In 2006, she got her first chance of performing solo at the Carnegie Hall. The same year Falu collaborated with Born Into Brothels Ensemble. Falu made history in 2008 when her song “Rabba” became the first ever Hindi song to be aired on Fox Channel.
Falu was invited to perform a duet with Oscar Award winning Indian composer A.R Rehman at the Time Magazine's 100 Gala event. Together Rehman and Falu sang the song “Jai Ho” from the movie Slumdog Millionaire whose music was composed by Rehman. Till date Falu has released two studio albums; her first self-titled album was released in 2007 followed by Foras Road that came out in 2013. Some other albums on which she has collaborated with other artists are Asana OHM Shanti, Nearly Home by Karyshma, Rare Elements, Om Yoga Mix, At Ease, Realize by Karsh Kale, Melodies of Circumstances and A Prayer for the Planet by Global Noize. Falu's second album Foras Road is a semi-classical one that was produced by the award winning producer Danny Blume. This album contained tracks like “Govind,” “Tarana,” “Savan,” “Ghumar” and “Bahaar.” Her band performs music that draws influences from genres like alternative rock, electronic styles, Indian classical and contemporary pop. Some of the band members are Danny Blume on bass, Deep Singh on table, Soumya Chatterjee on violin, Gaurav Shah on harmonium, Dave Sharma on percussions and Mark Tewarson on guitars.
