The comedian had his share of struggling years. His first gig was at Long Island’s Governor’s Comedy Cabaret, but it did not work out for the young comedian. It was in 1988 that Attel for the first time appeared on television on VH1's Stand-Up Spotlight, but the breakthrough came five years later when he landed on The Late Show with David Letterman. Dave Attell started making appearances on HBO special and in 1997 got an episode of HBO Comedy Half-Hour. In the meantime, during the 90s he also worked as a writer but did not let his focus shift from comedy.

His relationship with Comedy Central started in 1995 and this lead to opening of new doors for the young comedian who went on to star in many of their shows and became a regular commentator of The Daily Show with John Stewart . His segment termed as The Ugly American reached a wider audience gaining him popularity and a growing fan base.

Later in 2000, he managed to have his own show titled, Insomanic With Dave Attel. The show became a huge hit and has given Dave Attell recognition for his comic style that he did not enjoy before. It became one of the networks biggest hits that went on for four seasons.
