The first band that comes to mind when you hear the word Red Dirt is without any doubt Cross Canadian Ragweed. Established in 1994, in the Valley of red soil, Oklahoma, the band is considered one of the most successful Red Dirt bands in the United States of America today. The quartet band has been named after its members. First there is Grady Cross, who plays the guitar, Cody Canada, who also plays the guitars and is the main singer of the band and then finally there is Randy Ragsdale who is the drummer. Altogether, they make Cross Canadian Ragweed. The bass player Jeremy Plato however did not lend his name to that of the band, all this lead to the rumor that Plato did not contribute much to the music of the band. All these rumors were denied by Cody Canada who said that Plato was one of the founding members of the band.

Red Dirt is a music which is said to be born in Oklahoma but some believe that it has a cousin in the form of the Texan Red Dirt music. Oklahoma Red Dirt artists have been denying that from the beginning but the two kinds of music have developed a liking for each other as time passed. Red Dirt is defined as 'country music with an attitude'. While others believe it is the beautiful child of Rock and Country music. This very child has produced many offspring in the form of some of the most unique Red Dirt music artists like Cross Canadian Ragweed band.

The band was founded in Yukon, a city of Oklahoma but was relocated to the small town of Stillwater. The local entertainment scene in Stillwater was hip due to Mike McClure's acts like The Great Divide. Another local celebrity Jimmy LaFave was pretty famous due to his song writing and singing. But in no time Cross Canadian Ragweed were successful in making their mark on the local entertainment scene. And the reception the band received by the small college town people made it feel that it was welcome. So soon enough, they were enjoying college radio airplay and rocking their way through to people's heart for they had made it clear enough that they were here to stay. Soon after, the band released its first album in 1998 which was called Carney. Unfortunately enough, the album though was a hit but it did not make it into the US Country or the US charts. A year later, the band released its second album under Broken Records single title called Live and Loud at the Wormy Dog Saloon and in 2001, Highway 377, which was band's third studio album was released. The first and the third albums were released by Smith Music Group.

The story of their third album which was title after the band name is very sad. For this album was dedicated to Mandy Rangsdale who died in a car crash. This was a particularly sad moment for the band. This album was also called the purple album due to the color of its cover. The only good thing which happened for the band during this time was the fact that this album finally made their mark on the US Country music and the band finally made it into the US Country Chart and elevated to be at the 70th spot which was pretty good for a start.

This did prove to be a starting point for the band and a forerunner of their success. The album which followed was magnificent; in fact it was so good that with the release of Soul Gravy, the fourth album of the band, it finally got the place it deserved. This album was a mega hit as it landed at the 4th spot on the Billboard Country Charts. The fifth album Garage was also a hit. It included that single 'Fightin' For' which made it to the US Country Chart and reached 39 spot. During the next two years, the band released a double live album CD and a DVD as well. It was called Back to Tulsa: Live and Loud at
Cain's Ballroom. It was released by Universal South and it did considerably well on the overall US Music Charts by reaching 120. It had a way better ranking in the US Country charts where it reached number 27.

In 2007, the band released Mission California. This album too was released by Universal South. This album did just as good as the last two studio albums of the band and ended up on the 10th spot in US Country Charts. Their last album Happiness and All the Other Things dedicated to the late Randall Poodie Locke. This album speaks volumes about bands potential.
