Al Murray
Alastair James Hay Al Murray is a British comedian. He is best known for his stand-up persona, The Pub Landlord who is a stereotypical xenophobic public house licensee.
In 2003, Al Murray was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy. Later in 2007, he was voted number sixteen on Channel 4's hundred greatest stand-ups.
Born in Stewkley, Buckinghamshire, Murray attended Bedford School. He is a graduate of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he studied history. During the course of his studies in Oxford, he performed in the comedy group, the Oxford Revue in a show directed by Stewart Lee.
Also, as a teenager, Murray was a drummer in a band with his schoolmates. He started out with an act that involved sound-effect impressions, which included guns, animals and a particularly impressive car boot. It was a combination that prompted an equal number of plaudits for vocal skill and complaints of tastelessness.
In 1999, Murray won the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He has toured with other comedians including Harry Hill, Jim Tavare and Frank Skinner. Murray first appeared when he was the tour support act for Harry Hill. In 1995, he was featured in a short film, Pub Fiction.
A quiz show, Fact Hunt presented by Murray as the Pub Landlord and named after the fictional quiz machine of the same name from Time Gentlemen Please was shown on late-night ITV in 2005. His theatre show with the pub landlord character My Gaff, My Rules was short-listed for a Laurence Olivier Award in 2002.

Murray in the character of Pub Landlord challenges the audience to name any country in the world before producing some reasonable example of Britain bettering it. Murray has also appeared in character as the central focus of the television series Time Gentlemen Please. His other television appearances include the An Audience with... strand.
In 2004, Murray appeared as a contestant in the first series of Hells Kitchen, and Gordon Ramsay's cookery based reality show on ITV. The following year he appeared as a contestant on Comic Relief does Fame Academy on BBC One.
Murray also presented Al Murray's Road to Berlin on the Discovery Channel. It was a series about the last phase of World War II, taking him from the beaches of Normandy, through Arnhem and up the Rhine, ending in Berlin. In an episode about Operation Market Garden Murray parachuted, together with veterans, from a plane, to commemorate the battle.
The year 2007 saw Murray publishing a book called The Pub Landlord's Book of British Common Sense. This book consists of his opinions and views on a number of such topics as James Bond actors, religion, politics, television, films and Churchill quotes.
In October 2008, Al Murray joined Queen and Paul Rodgers on stage at the O2 Arena. He appeared as his signature Pub Landlord look and danced and sang along to the new Queen and Paul Rodgers track 'Cosmos Rockin'.
Some of the popular catchphrases of The Pub Landlord are All hail to the ale!, ...beautiful British name!, Time-waster!, You DISGUST me!, Pint for the fella... Glass of white wine/ fruit-based drink for the lady!, The Point is this... if we had no rules where would we be? : France! and if we had too may rules where would we be?: Germany!, Is your dad proud of you, son? He's never said so, has he? and I was never confused etc.
On 11th November 2008, Al Murray had a brief cameo role in ITV drama, The Commander, as a bookie. He later presented Have I got News for You on November 28th.
