2 Skinnee J's was formed in 1991 when friends from Columbia University, New York, Andy Action (drums), DJ Casper (keyboards), Sammy B (bass), Joey Viturbo (guitar), Rabbi J-Slim (vocals), and Special J, formed the band. The band, like many of its contemporaries has had its fair share of lineup changes but that has not affected the quality of its music. Matter of fact, with each new incoming musician, the band and its music has only gotten better and more popular amongst its fans, in all the four corners of the United States. Presently, the band consists of, in addition to its original members, Andy Action and Special J, A.J. "Stumpy" Johnson, Stevie Spice, Lance Rockworthy, Eddie Eyeball, and J Guevara. As mentioned earlier, the band, in addition to playing alternative and rap rock, play nerdcore hip hop as well. This is truly exceptional since not many bands play this sub-genre of hip hop music. Nerdcore hip hop is essentially hip hop which is of interests to nerds. Nerdcore hip hop rappers rap about computers, fantasy, science, role-playing games, Star Wars, science fiction and politics. Getting back to the band's discography, their first cassette was 6 Songs for 5 Bucks. With the release of this cassette the band created a niche for itself in the cutthroat world of rock and hip hop music. It is worth mentioning here that the band undertook extensive touring schedule soon after the release of its debut cassette, earning them fans all over. 2 Skinnee J's released their second cassette in 1994 titled, American Heroes. The band's biggest break however came in 1998 when it signed up with a major record producing company, Capricorn.
Their debut major release came under the title, SuperMercado! The album was a huge commercial success as well as a critically acclaimed album with Allmusic rating it with 4/5 stars. Some of the more unforgettable songs of the band like "Riot Nrrrd", "You're a Champion", "Ball Point Man", and others, were all from this album. The super-success of the album led 2 Skinnee J's to release Volumizer. It, too, like its predecessor was a huge hit both amongst the band's fans and music critics with Allmusic, once again, rating it with 4/5 stars. "Coming Home", "Loud Neighbor", "Lemon Drop", "Lost and Found", and others, were some of the album's more memorable hits.
