Kid Ink is the stage name of Los Angeles-based rapper Brian Todd Collins, who was spotted on the hip hop front after the release of this first mixtape titled World Tour. This offering was issued under the name Rockstar, marking the beginning of his popularity. It all started when he came to the attention of the popular DJ III Will, known to run 'HotNewHipHop', a hip hop website. The latter then signed the artist to his own independent label, Tha Alumni Group, following which Collins acquired new rap name, Kid Ink.
At the start of 2011, Ink released mixtape Crash Landing that featured prominent artists from the likes of Meek Mill, Ty Dolla Sign and Roscoe Dash, alongside a few more. In the summer's of 2012, he issued his third mixtape Daydreamer that was soon made available for downloading on many sites featuring other musicians like Cory Gunz, Meek Mill, Sean Kingston, Maejor Ali and more. By October the same year, he recorded and released yet another mixtape called Wheels Up, which brought together the work of several more artists including Tyga, and Nipsey Hussle, among others. A few months later, he featured in the XXL Freshman class of 2012 alongside other rappers such as Macklemore and Future. Kid Ink tickets are considered to be quite a rap treat among hip hop fans, particularly those who can relate to his hometown.
In June 2012, Kid Ink released his debut independent album titled Up & Away that was moderately successful. The offering was produced by Jahlil Beats and Ned Cameron, among other contributing artists, and peaked at number twenty on the US Billboard 200 in its initial week. It later peaked at number three on R&B charts, and number two on Rap charts in the US. The album gained some popularity in Canada as well where it charted to the seventy-eighth position. Its first single, called Time of Your Life, released before the album was followed by a second single titled, Lost in the Space. By November, the rapper issued his fifth mixtape called Rocketshipshawty.
By early 2013, Kid Ink announced his new record deal with RCA Records, soon after which he premiered his major label single Bad Ass, featuring Meek Mill and Wale, with producer Devin Cruise. The track was made available for digital downloading by the end of January, alongside which it was also released in the US on Rhythm Crossover radio in February. Since then, it has climbed up to the ninetieth spot on Billboard Hot 100 while peaking at the twenty-seventh spot in Hip-Hop/Hot R&B Songs charts. In the following May, the artist announced the release of his first project with the RCA, which was an EP called Almost Home. The offering featured such musicians as Rico Love, ASAP Ferg, Meek Mill, and French Montana, among several others. When the EP was released, it initially appeared at number twenty-seven on Billboard 200, while appearing at number five on US R&B Billboard charts and number four on US Rap charts. It also made it well in the UK where it managed to be at the thirty-fourth spot on UK R&B charts. In September, he announced the release of the first single from his album My Own Lane, called Show Me, which was produced by DJ Mustard and featured Chris Brown.
