Kenny Rogers is a Huston born singer and songwriter who started his musical career during 50s. The first band he ever joined was "The Scholars," a rockabilly group whose single "Poor Little Doggie" was quite a success. Two more singles were released by the band before it disbanded, giving Rogers a chance to start his career as a solo artist. He released his debut single "That Crazy Feeling" in 1958. The album was a minor hit, selling a considerably good number of copies initially. As the sales started slowing down, Rogers became a part of The Bobby Doyle Trio, a jazz group which recorded for Columbia Records. The trio did a lot of work in local clubs before it separated in 1966.
Rogers also worked as a session musician with other country music performers like Eddy Arnold and Mickey Gilley and joined The New Christy Minstrels in 1966. Within a year, Rogers and three other members of Minstrels; Terry Williams, Mike Settle and Thelma Camacho, left the group to form a band of their own named "The First Edition." The band was later renamed as "Kenny Rogers and The First Edition." In his hippie get up with long brown strands of hair and pink sunglasses, Rogers made quite a progress in his First Edition days and released a number of country and pop hits including "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition Was In)," "But You Know I Love You," "Something's Burning" and "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town."
It was in 1976 that Rogers started his solo career after the splitting of The First Edition. He signed up with United Artists and released the first album "Love Lifted Me" which produced two minor hits, the self-tilted single and "While the Feeling's Good." "Runaway Girl," another single from this album got featured in Trackdown, a motion picture. Rogers came up with his second record, a self-titled album in 1976 whose single "Lucille" was his first major solo hit. The single peaked at number one on the pop charts in twelve countries and sold more than five million copies. Owing to this single, the album "Kenny Rogers" reached the top on the Billboard Country Album Chart, firmly establishing his post-First Edition career.
Roger's went on to release two more albums "Daytime Friends" and "Love or Something Like it" which went platinum and gold, respectively. More success came to Roger's way with the release of "The Gambler," his fifth multi-million selling album in 1978. His last album of 70s "Kenny" remained equally successful and produced an internationally hit single "Coward of the Country." The single was charted on number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Towards the end of the 1970s, Rogers and Dottie West, two county music legends, teamed up for a series duets and albums which won then two CMA Awards, two Grammy nominations, two gold records and one Music City News Awards. Together, they produced hit singles like "Till I Can Make It On My Own" and "Every Time Two Fools Collide" and also toured for several years, performing at a number of sold out arenas and stadiums.
To date, Rogers has recorded more than 120 hit country singles and 32 studio albums. He has sold more than 130 million copies worldwide, which makes him one of the top selling country singers of all time. His latest album "You Can't Make Old Friends" was released recently on Warner Bros record.
