Soon, he began performing and got his big breakthrough in 1970 with the No.3 single "Fire and Rain" from his second album, Sweet Baby James. This was followed by his next year's first No.1 hit - "You've Got a Friend", a cover of the classic song of Carole King. Then in 1976, Taylor's Greatest Hits album sold almost 12 million US copies and was certified Diamond. After signing with the Columbia Records in 1977, Taylor released his classic album - JT, and earned rave reviews. Thus, Taylor received a high amount of popularity in the 1970s with his brand of soft and acoustic music. Although he did see a decline in his career, he soon regained his power during the 1990s and 2000s. This was mainly due to the release of some of his best-selling and most-awarded albums such as Hourglass, October Road and Covers.
