Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey return to Broadway with a brand new musical If/Then. After the phenomenal success of their acclaimed musical Next to Normal, the two have joined hands to bring their brilliant music to stage once again. You can witness their fresh score with If/Then tickets.
If/Then will be pre-released at D.C's National Theatre in the beginning of November this year. The official opening of the musical at this theatre will be in the last week of November. This will be followed by the musical's Broadway first preview in the first week of March 2014. The official release and opening of the musical at the Broadway will take place at the end of March. Both the preview and opening will be held in Richard Rogers Theatre situated in New York.
The musical is getting great reviews and is anticipated to be a great addition to the lineup of new musicals on Broadway. The highlight of the play is that it stars the Tony Award winning actress Idina Menzel. Menzel won the Tony award for her performance in Wicked. Since then it will be her first Broadway come back. The musical is directed by Michael Grief who has directed Menzel in Rent. The music direction from Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's lyrics and book has revived the magic of this duo through this David Stone production once again. Kitt and Yorkey have won the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Awards in 2010 for the categories Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations for Next to Normal. This effort of theirs is likely to win acclaim and awards.
Idina Menzel will be starring with Anthony Rapp in the lead roles. The couple has appeared together before as well in the Broadway musical Rent. Later they also appeared in the movie version of Rent. Idina Menzel is playing the lead role of the story Elizabeth. Other cast members include LaChanze as Kate and James Snyder as Josh; while the supporting cast includes Jason Tam, Jerry Dixon, Tamika Lawrence and Jenn Colella. LaChanze has gotten a lot of media attention for her Tony Award for The Color Purple as well as the musicals Ragtime and Once on This Island.
If/Then is a story of Elizabeth who moves to New York City to start over her life again. Coming out of a mid-life crisis, she relocates to Manhattan in search of a fresh start. Her new life begins with a new home, making new friends and a struggle for a career. She also struggles to be accommodated and acknowledged for her efforts in the society. Deliberate and calculated decisions create problems for her. Anthony Rapp plays the role of Lucas, Elizabeth's old college friend whom she meets when she returns to New York. While LaChanze plays the role of Kate, an elementary school teacher and Elizabeth's neighbor. The story is a romantic one which is set in the backdrop of Manhattan today. It will try to teach how chances and choices clash and how we must behave independently with relationships.
Menzel's role as Elizabeth is being tagged as the highlight of this musical. She plays it with great passion while portraying strength and weakness of a woman striving and toiling on her own. Critics who have seen her work call it her best effort to date. Menzel's appearance in Rent in 1996 launched her in Broadway and earned her a Tony Award nomination and landed her in musicals like Aida and Wicked. Her performance as Elphaba in Wicked won the first Tony Award for her. Her experience on the New York stage and in numerous other musicals such as See Hair at Encores, The Wild Party, See What I Wanna See and roles in movies and sitcoms such as Ask The Dusk, Chess in Concert, Enchanted, Beowulf, Glee and Private Practice. Mendez also has a successful music career. Some of her top selling solo albums are Barefoot at the Symphony, Here and I Stand and Still I Can't Be Still.
