Ronald Reagan Building And International Trade Center
The Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center is the first federal building in Washington, D.C. The building has been designed for both governmental and private sector purposes.
Named after the former United States President Ronald Reagan, the facility joins federal, state and regional trade resources, international trade related businesses and services to convey the country"s, i.e. United States, recognition of the importance of trade in linking countries and communities.
It is the result of a successful partnership between the California Department of General Services and the Los Angeles State Building Authority. Host to conferences, trade shows, cultural events, and outdoor concerts, the Ronald Reagan Building is a true landmark!
Ronald Reagan Building is located above the Federal Triangle Metro station, on historic Pennsylvania Avenue in the heart of Washington, DC and has many of Washington, DC's attractions nearby.
The Federal Triangle was known as "the plague spot of Washington" in the 1890s due to the brothels and saloons situated there. The federal government purchased the land in the 1920s and the area was added in the Federal Triangle redevelopment plan of the late 1920s and 1930s.
Congress passed the Federal Triangle Development Act in 1987, accepting that a Federal building complex and international cultural and trade center will be made to complete the redevelopment of Pennsylvania Avenue. Thus the construction began in 1990.
A unanimous vote came from the congress to name the building after President Ronald Reagan. President Ronald Reagan was the one who had signed the legislation authorizing the building"s construction. Therefore, the name for the building was to honor him. The building was officially dedicated on the 5th of May, in 1998.
What was once the "plague spot", is now boasting a crown jewel building, known as the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. The building is a majestic landmark and also is the nation"s newest architectural achievement.
Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center"s signature feature is the domed Rotunda. Whereas, the most dynamic interior feature of the building is a cone-shaped, horizontal glass skylight, comprising an acre of glass.
The skylight soars from 35 to 125 feet over the 170-foot-diameter Atrium. The architects behind this magnificent building are James Ingo Freed and Ellerbe Becket. It was the most expensive building of its time, being constructed at a cost of $768 million.
The facility features largest parking garage, information center, and a metro rail station. It is visited by more than 1 million tourists on an annual basis.
On a regular basis, many people are drawn towards the building due to the summer concert series held on the Woodrow Wilson Plaza, diverse food court, dramatic settings for conferences and weddings, and exquisite art and architecture that the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center comprises.
Other than this, the building also houses the permanent theater for the comedy troupe the Capitol Steps, and also the Aria Italian Restaurant.
