Orpheum Theatre bc
The city of Vancouver in British Columbia is regarded as a booming cultural city with various entertainment facilities located all over the city. However, one place that has become the pride of the city and its people is the marvelous Orpheum Theatre that personifies the performing arts scene of Canada.
The Orpheum is one of the most popular theatres and music venues of Vancouver. Located on Granville Street, it beautifies the downtown area of the city.
The theatre falls under Vancouver Civic Theatres group of live performance venues along with the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and the Vancouver Playhouse. It presents a fine array of live shows, theatricals and musical nights that are attended by a huge number of people.
Most of the fame of the Orpheum Theatre BC comes from its historic significance and the role it played in boosting performing arts culture in the region. This grand theater was originally opened on November 7, 1927.
It was then used to be a vaudeville house. The theater got early recognition because of its opulence and magnificence. Constructed at a cost of around $1.25 million, the Orpheum was the largest and most lavish theatre of the Pacific Coast at that time.
Different presentations kept playing at The Orpheum during its initial years. However, it soon became restricted to showing movies only. It was on March 19, 1974 when the City of Vancouver purchased the theatre and took the task of its restoration as a vaudeville house. It was closed in November 1975 following by extensive renovation by the architectural company Thomson, Berwick, Pratt and Partners.
It was on April 2, 1977 when the city of Vancouver re-witnessed the magic and charm of its beloved Orpheum Theatre. It was re-opened in style and became the permanent home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
Orpheum hit big this time also and more and more patrons began to seek comfort in this great entertainment venue. The appreciation for the grandeur of the past and growing concern about the historic buildings in the early 90"s led to another renovation of the Orpheum, this time a major one.
During the extensive refurbishment, Orpheum Theatre was restored to its former beauty with a cost of over $10 Million. This time around, special care was taken on facilitating the theatre with all modern amenities so that it can accommodate different kind of live events. All the money and effort was well-paid as the theatre was loved by all after the completion of renovation.
Today, Orpheum Theatre speaks for the love and admiration Vancouver has for arts and culture. It is considered one of the most important performing arts venues of the world mainly because of its historic importance.
It houses the last theatre organ of Canada, hence the Wurlitzer remains the permanent star of the show at Orpheum. The classic Orpheum's neon sign that was donated by Jim Pattison in the 1970s also appeals the patrons.
