The history of the Theater dates back to 1928, when the state-of-the-art entertainment venue opened its doors for the public. It was designed by Detroit-based architecture Maurice Finkel; had a capacity of accommodating 1700 people; and featured Barton Theatre Pipe Organ, orchestra pit, and stage.

The Barton Opus is one of the few remaining organs at Michigan Theater which exists in its original location. After a period of low attendance, the theater was threatened with demolition in 1978.

A small group of organ enthusiasts launched a campaign and enlisted the support of civic leaders in Ann Arbor. The following year saw the history of Michigan Theater taking a new turn when the facility was converted to a performing arts center in 1979.

The facility is now used for the screening of feature films, concerts, lectures, and plays. However, the Organ continues to be heard on a regular basis and is also used with the Ann Arbor Symphony, for silent film accompaniments, and for solo recitals.

Today, the Michigan Theater is noted for showing independent films, stage productions and musical concerts. In addition to featuring live acts and movies, it plays host to the annual Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Ann Arbor Symphony, and the Ann Arbor Concert Band.

The facility also features a series of children"s stage productions entitled "Not Just For Kids" and a concert series called "the Legends of Rock & Roll".

These events draw a large number of people from different corners of the world and help generate revenues in food and tourist industries. Also noteworthy is the fact that the Michigan Theater was named 2006 Outstanding Historic Theatre by the League of Historic American Theaters.
