The idea of constructing a theatre that would serve as a performing facility for Princeton's Triangle Club came forth in 1888. It was named after Thomas N. Carter, an American lawyer who was a member of Princeton class of 1888. The facility was finally opened for the public in 1930 with the debut performance held by the Triangle Club as it celebrated the 40th anniversary of its annual show. Over the years the theatre started gaining popularity among the masses as a prime location for Broadway performances due to its huge proscenium stage, massive seating space and ideal location. The debut Broadway show that made its world premiere at the grand theatre was "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder. A few other musicals that made their way to the facility included "You Can't Take It" written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, "The Male Animal" by Elliot Nugent and James Thurber, "Bus Stop" presented by William Inge and "Without Love" written by Phillip Barry.
Even though the McCarter Theatre Center was primarily built to hold theatrical shows, the venue was also used for concert purposes. Primarily holding shows presented by the Princeton University choir, the first non-campus performance that was held at the facility was by the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1932. Since then numerous orchestral organizations have performed at the facility including the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra. Moreover, several prominent conductors have had the pleasure of displaying their talents at venue including Gregor Piatigorsky, Rudolf Serkin, Myra Hess, Jascha Heifetz, Zino Francescatti and Gaby and Robert Casadesus, to name a few.
Apart from concerts and theatricals, dance and ballet institutions were also invited to perform. Ruth St. Denis was the first dancer who took upon the stage of the theatre in 1930 and returned in the same year with his dance troupe, the Denishawn Dancers. Since then the New York City Ballet and American Ballet have been holding regular performances at the facility. The era of the nineties saw major renovations as the Princeton University decided to build a small theatre next to the main building, named the Roger S. Berlind Theatre. The campus now offers simultaneous productions.
Due to the diversity of the shows that are organized, the McCarter Theatre Center became the proud recipient of a Tony Award in 1994 for "Outstanding Regional Theatre". Watch an upcoming feature presentation at the renowned facility simply by grabbing McCarter Theatre Center tickets now.
