The Calvin Theatre ideal is educational. The theatre seeks to aid its audience in developing an insight into and empathy for different individuals and cultures. The atmosphere it comprises of is always, high energetic, with bustling noise, and welcomes an audience of all ages.

The Calvin brings into a variety of national and international talents hosting an impressive list of comedians, musicians and artists in the converted space throughout the year.

The Calvin Theatre Company is Calvin College's main theatre program. The company primarily performs in the Gezon Auditorium and the Lab Theatre. Formerly the company was known as Thespians, until 1993, when the name was changed to Calvin Theatre Company.

Today, the theatre company is a part of the Communications Arts and Sciences Department and has several staff and faculty dedicated specifically to the theatre program. Calvin College is a private, liberal arts college. The Theatre program employs three theatre faculty as well as a staff technical director, costume designer, and costumer.

They produce four theatrical productions per year: three are faculty or guest-directed, and the student-directed lab bill. It"s most famous productions so far has been, The Physicists-1991, Comedy of Errors-2000, Twelfth Night- 2001, The Bourgeois Gentleman, The Piano Lesson and As it is in Heaven-2002, Emma-2003, Edith Stein-2004, Jane Eyre and Richard III-2005, As You Like It , Disciples, and Arcadia-2006, Dead Man Walking and Sense and Sensibility-2007.

The company has also earned a numerous number of awards for the above mentioned productions. During the 2008-2009 school year, the theatre company, along with all of Calvin College, will celebrate the 75th anniversary of theatre at Calvin.

The celebration is called "75 Years of Inspiration". Quite a variety of activities are surrounding this celebration, including, lunches, concerts, lectures, conferences for each of the season's plays, and other community events.

The Calvin Theatre was once the largest movie theater in Northampton, Massachusetts, and was the home of first run films for almost 70 years. It was designed by the firm of Mowll and Rand. It opened on April 17, 1924. In the 1940s, it was part of Western Massachusetts Theatres.

Due to the arrival of the megapixels in the nearby theatre Headley, Calvin had to suffer a lot, as it struggled to survive second rate film bookings and large overhead. In 1994, Calvin put up a board stating that it has been closed temporarily.

However, Calvin was reborn as a live performance space in the late 1990s, when its potential was seen and it had been bought and renovated. The 1998 refurbishment work was supervised by Northampton architect Thomas Douglas. The renovations retained the original 1924 design, making Northampton's largest concert venue a historic site.

Recently, this magnificent venue, Calvin Theatre, has hosted a concert by the band Killer, which has been reported to be entertaining and compelling visually and musically as well.

The upcoming events taking place here, includes a concert by Disco Biscuits in the month of January. Next on the list is the famous Pink Floyd, in the event named, The Pink Floyd Experience.
