It was in 1965 that businessman "Bruce Mailman" bought two buildings in the area of "Astor Place." He was a theater enthusiast so he modified the two structures and the Astor Place Theatre was formed three years later. It opened its doors for the public for the first time in the year 1968. The arena is situated in New York in the famous "Colonnade Row." The Colonnade Row first became part of the city's landscape way back in the year 1831. It was a collection of nine buildings that were connected to one another. Over the course of subsequent years, due to various reasons, five of the original monuments were brought down. Four of those still grace the area as a reminder of the city's historic importance.
The Astor Place Theatre's name is the only thing that has a connection to the infamous "Astor Place Riots" that took place in the year 1849. The venue itself wasn't the arena right in the middle of all that mayhem. The first show played at the venue was titled "The Indian Wants the Bronx" on 17th January, 1968. That production was from Israel Horovitz and it had a certain young Mr. Al Pacino starring in it. The show went on a run of one hundred and seventy seven performances to mark the opening of this wonderful facility in style.
This magnificent theater takes its architectural inspiration from the "Greek Revival" movement that took place between eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The epicenter was the north side of Europe and of course United States. It was officially recognized as the city's major landmarks in 1963.
The Astor Place Theatre has seen numerous theatrical productions since its debut. It has developed a reputation for being somewhat of a breeding ground for new and budding playwrights. Not only that, it has also played host to famous performance oriented acts. The sensational "Blue Man Group" have been residents there since the year 1991. They also are now the people who own the entire facility.
The Astor Place Theatre is a historical landmark. From its opening to this very day, it has provided the stage for some of the most memorable onstage performances ever seen. Now that the curtain is about to be raised for the latest season of performances, the show is about to get underway once again. Grab your Astor Place Theatre tickets and be a part of it live.
