Based in New York, the Shen Yun Performing Arts has its roots in the spiritual practices of Falun Gong. The company was established by Chinese artists living in North America in 2006. It started touring by 2007 with an entourage of ninety performers. By 2009 the Shen Yun had grown to include 200 performers in its three companies; The Touring Company, the International Company, and The New York Company.  The shows presented include depiction of ancient Chinese legends as well as the hardships faced by the followers of Falun Gong in China today. The live orchestra, opera style singing and the intricate costumes lend a magical air to the performances, each being introduced in Chinese and well as the local language before it begins.
