The Montreal Alouettes are a Canadian football franchise, a member of the Canadian Football League, known popularly as the CFL. Founded in 1946, they are based in the city of Montreal, within the Canadian province of Quebec. Their home field is the Percival Molson Memorial Stadium and they are a member of the CFL's East Division.
Their official colors are white, blue, red and silver and are commonly known by the nickname, the Als. The Alouettes head coach is Dan Hawkins with Jim Popp as the general manager and Rovert Wetenhall the owner of the franchise. They are one of the greatest CFL franchises, with many wins against their name. Many Montreal Alouettes tickets sold for each of its games.
The Montreal Alouettes are the proud holders of a record seven Grey Cups, the biggest title in CFL.. They won the cup first in 1949 and then won it three times in the seventies; in 1970, 1974 and 1979. Forward to the new millennium, and it has won the cup in 2002, 2009 and lately in 2010. The franchise's mascot is Touche, often seen cheering members of the team from the sidelines. They play home games during the regular season at the Percival Molson Memorial Stadium and their playoff games at the Olympic Stadium.
The Montreal Alouettes were founded when Baltimore Stallions moved from Baltimore to Montreal in 1996. Formerly, Montreal had been home to a number of franchises, including the original Alouettes, from 1946 to 1981 and the Montreal Concordes. Other teams to have been situated in the city included the Montreal Football Club, founded in 1872 and active until 1915, the Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers, the Montreal Indians, the Montreal Cubs and the Montreal Royales. These teams were active up to the forties.
Under the leadership of Jim Popp, the team's general manager and quarterback Anthony Calvillo, they have dominated the league since 2000 and are widely hailed as one of the most successful teams in the CFL. They led the league with a 168-88-1 record during the first decade of 2000's and finished first place in eight regular seasons, two of which were won back to back. They have the largest number of appearances in the Grey Cup since 2000, at eight, winning three Grey Cups since 2000. They also have the Longest Active Playoff Streak in the CFL today, and have the second Longest of all time, having made it to the CFL playoffs for seventeen straight seasons.
This is a franchise that traces its history back to the Montreal club that was founded in 1872 and was named the Montreal Alouettes in 1946. They continued operating until 1981, followed by the Montreal Concordes, who played for five more years, the last two as the Alouettes. Following the move of the Baltimore Stallions, the franchise entered once again into the world of pro Canadian football and has dominated it since then.
They are the proud owners of eighteen East Division Regular Season Championships; since 2000, they have also won the championship in 2000, followed by each year from 2002 to 2004, in 2006, each year from 2008 to 2010 and then in 2012, making them the current, reigning East Division champions. They have appeared a record eighteen times in the Grey Cup, a total of eight since 2000.
In the 2012 season, the franchise won eleven games. They have one of the biggest and strongest fan bases in the CFL, with their one-hundredth consecutive sellout of Montreal Alouettes tickets for their games celebrated in 2010. Their average attendance for games in 2011 was over twenty three thousand per game. Fourteen of their players have been inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, including Junior Ah You, George Dixon, Terry Evanshen, Dickie Harris, John O'Quinn, Mike Pringle, Pierre Vercheval and Virgil Wagner.
