Georgetown Hoyas
The official representatives of Georgetown University in college sports namely the Georgetown Hoyas are the athletics teams that participate in the NCAA's Division I Big East Conference in 26 sports and the Division I-AA Patriot League in football. The men's basketball team is the school's most renowned and most successful program, but Hoyas have achieved ample success in a wide variety of sports. Jack the Bulldog is the Hoyas' Mascot at Georgetown games.

According to the university, the exact derivation of the term Hoya is yet unidentified. The official story is that at some point previous to 1920, students familiar in the classical languages made-up the Greek hoia or hoya, meaning what or such, and the Latin saxa, to form What Rocks! Depending on who enlightens all with the story, the rocks either refer to the baseball team, which also held the nickname Stonewalls after the Civil War, to the stalwart defense of the football team, or to the stone wall that enclosed the campus.

In 1920, students began distributing the campus's first regular newspaper under the name The Hoya, after effectively imploring Rev. Coleman Nevils, S.J., Dean of the College, to alter the name of the young paper, which was initially entitled as The Hilltopper. By the fall of 1928, the newspaper was rechristened to as the Hoyas, taking after the teams name. Dean Nevils's former school, College of the Holy Cross, also refers to the term Hoya in one of its fight songs, as does a third Jesuit school, Marquette University.

Big East and other adversaries, whose schools were predisposed to have more tangible nicknames, have long used What's a Hoya? as a mantra to ridicule Georgetown.Harrison High School, situated in Kennesaw, Georgia, is the only other institute in the country accredited to share this name.

Georgetown's nickname is The Hoyas, but its mascot is Jack the Bulldog. Amongst the most primitive mascots was a terrier named Stubby, whose name is commonly unknown today but was perhaps the most famous dog of his generation. Stubby was discovered by a soldier at the Yale Bowl, and went on to fight in the trenches of World War I in France. After that, he was promoted to Sergeant for his actions in combat and awarded a special medal by General John J. Pershing in a post-war ceremonial. His possessor then entered to Georgetown Law School, and Stubby became part of the halftime show.

Since then onwards, Georgetown had a live dog as its mascot, infact, most notably known as Rev. Vincent McDonough, SJ's dog, Jazz Bo, nicknamed Hoya until 1951, when the school joined a growing movement among private schools - notably the University of Chicago - to shelve football programs as un-academic. The dog as a representation lived on, despite the fact, and from time to time students would bring pet bulldogs to games. In 1962 the school took up a drawing of a Bulldog named Jack? as its logo, wearing a blue and gray cap. In 1979, the university instigated the custom of dressing up a student in blue and gray bulldog attire.

At last, in 1999, Rev. Scott Pilarz, S.J. revitalized the custom of a live bulldog; after he left for the University of Scranton, Georgetown instantaneously secured a new bulldog puppy and found another Jesuit, Rev. Christopher Steck, S.J., to look after him.

The Georgetown University Men's Basketball team is perchance the most renowned Hoya program. Georgetown's first intercollegiate men's basketball team was incepted in 1907. John Thompson III, son of the proficient Hoyas coach John Thompson, is presently the current head coach. In olden times, the Hoyas have been well regarded not only for their team success, but also for their capability to produce players that after graduation succeed both on the court and off the court, which prominently include players such as Patrick Ewing and Henry Hyde. The team has reached the NCAA Tournament Final Four 5 times, has won the Big East Men's Basketball Tournament 7 times, and has been victorious in the Big East regular season title 3 times; in each of these cases, it most recently achieved the accomplishment in 2007.

Predominantly, the women's lacrosse team has persisted to remain strong in recent years, winning 6 successive Big East titles. The Lady Hoyas reached the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship final in both 2001 and 2002. They play their home games on Multi-Sport Facility namely the Harbin Field, which is encircled on two sides by dormitories, to adequately large crowds. In 2005, their first season under new coach Ricky Fried, the team went 13-5 and made the NCAA Tournament for the 8th straight year.

In the 1940s, Georgetown had one of the best college football teams in entire US. As the college game became pricier, yet, Georgetown refused to make the costly investments that other Catholic universities like Notre Dame made to preserve a superior program.

In 1941, Georgetown played in the Orange Bowl, where they were defeated by 14-7 to Mississippi State. They also played in the 1950 Sun Bowl against Texas Western. Texas Western, now named as the University of Texas at El Paso or UTEP, won the game by a score of 33-20.

In 1950, subsequent to a 2-7 season with defeats against the Penn State, Miami, and Maryland sports teams, Georgetown ceased playing this sport, which was later, restored in 1964 by students. Its first game attracted 8,000 to campus against New York University (NYU). In 1978, varsity football recommenced playing at the Division III level. At present, Georgetown plays at the Division I-AA level (due to NCAA legislation forbidding Division I or II schools from playing football in lower divisions), competing in the Patriot League and perennially plays against Ivy League schools.

Big Jim Ricca, an NFL defensive end and offensive lineman, who completed his graduation in 1949, was the last Hoya to play in the NFL.

Conceivably, the football team's most skillful and talented athlete was Al Blozis, who played for the NFL's New York Giants prior to being killed in action in World War II. Blozis's great athletic achievements, nonetheless, came in shot-put and discus. He was responsible for setting up an indoor world record for the shot-put, throwing it 56 feet 4.5 inches in 1941. Also, he was the national indoor and outdoor shot-put champion in both 1942 and 1943.

The many incredible sports teams that make up Georgetown University's athletics program are known as the Georgetown Hoyas. These spectacular teams have made a name for themselves all over the nation in numerous sports. The Georgetown Hoyas are part of the Big East Conference within the NCAA's Division I. The football teams play within the Patriot League, the rowing team in the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges and the sailing team in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association. These teams are overseen by athletics director, Lee Reed, are the university itself is located in the capital of the USA, Washington DC. There are a total of twenty three teams; eleven of them men's team, eleven women's teams and one co-ed. The Georgetown Hoyas mascot is Jack the Bulldog with the teams' nickname being The Hoyas.

Amongst these teams, the basketball team shines brightest; but that hardly means that the rest are in any way dull. Indeed, each and every Georgetown Hoyas sports team has distinguished itself in one way or another. The men's basketball team has been of the Final Four in the national NCAA Tournament a record five times, won the national NCAA Tournament in 1984, won the Big East Tournament conference not once but seven glorious times and also won seven Big East regular season titles. The men's and women's rowing teams have also been very successful, ranking second all over the nation in the lightweight category with many representing the US in the Olympics. The women's lacrosse team is also highly regarded, having won six straight Big East conference titles from 2001 to 2006 and made it to the NCAA Tournament eight straight times. Thus, for quality college sports, these are the teams to watch play live through Georgetown Hoyas Tickets.
