The University of Florida takes great pride in its sports program and as a result the Gators athletics department has flourished. They are arguably the best program in the country and have been a dominant force in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), winning the SEC All-Sports trophy twenty four times in the last twenty seven years.

Taking the plunge

The Gators title was selected in the early 1900s and is derived from the commonly found alligators in the Florida swamp lands. It was made famous by a merchant in 1908 who was selling the university pennants with the animal embossed on them. The university takes part in several different types of sports and fields twenty one varsity sports teams. Men can participate in nine varsity programs while eleven are exclusively for women. Some disciplines  have recently been introduced with more additions planned for the future.

Winning is a way of life

The Gators have achieved quiet a lot of success on the field. They have won sixteen national titles in men's sports, while their women side has won nineteen to date. They have also won over two hundred conference titles, with their men's swimming and diving team enjoying the most success with thirty six championships, followed by women's tennis with twenty eight.
