Starting in the 1950s, piano rock sees piano (or keyboard) replace rhythm guitar in compositions. The Fray is composed of vocalist/pianist Isaac Slade, guitarist/backing vocalist Joe King, drummer Bill Wysocki, and lead guitarist Dave Welsh. Slade and King attended Denver’s Faith Christian Academy. In 2002, they reunited for jamming and invited their junior Wysocki, who brought along band member Welsh. Slade’s brother Caleb was initially bassist but fell out. Their misunderstandings prompted Isaac to write “Over My Head”. Radio station KTCL finally accepted a demo of the song for airplay. The overwhelming response got them an Epic Records deal, with debut effort How to Save a Life (2005)coming out.
 
“Never Say Never”, “Over My Head” (2x), “You Found Me” (2x), and “How to Save a Life” (3x) went at least Platinum. The latter became a smash-hit by featuring in Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs. The Fray has released three albums (including 2009’s #1 The Fray), and has 3 Billboard Music Awards.
