The band, also abbreviated as DMB, was founded by Dave Matthews, the singer-songwriter and guitarist, along with the bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist LeRoi Moore and Carter Beauford on backup vocals. After Moore’s sudden demise, Jeff Coffin joined on as the band’s saxophonist. Since then, the band has been on the ladder of success and has entertained worldwide audiences with their sound.

The band released their first live EP titled Recently in 1994 after having released Remember Two Things in 1993 as an independent album. Their second album, Under the Table and Dreaming was released in 1994, followed by Before These Crowded Streets in 1998. Next, the band released Everyday in 2001, Busted Stuff in 2002 and Stand Up in 2005. This was their last album before the tragic death of band member Moore. Following his death, the first album released was in 2009, titled Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King. This album opened at number one on the Billboard 200, making it the fifth consecutive top spot debut for the band.
