A Tale of Two Circuses
The origin of Barnum Bailey circus goes back to 1857 when the 'P.T. Barnum's Great Travelling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan and Hippodrome' was established in Wisconsin. It soon came to be billed as the 'Greatest Show on Earth.' Around the same time, another circus, known as the Cooper and Bailey circus began to give them serious competition.
Jumbo the Elephant
After their unsuccessful attempts to buy a baby elephant to increase their attraction, the two owners decided to merge their circuses into one great act. And so it was that in 1881, the 'Barnum and Bailey Circus' was formed which featured the successful introduction of 'Jumbo', the world's largest elephant.
In 1884, among many other small circuses doing the rounds, there was one company that had bigger dreams. Ringling Brothers Circus was the joint effort of five brothers who had combined to form a small circus in Wisconsin. With the advent of trains, the Ringling Brothers were able to cover a larger area in a lesser amount of time. During the five years when Barnum Bailey had gone abroad on their European tour, Ringling Brothers made a name for themselves in the West and became a big selling attraction. After Barnum Bailey returned in 1905, it was only a matter of time before the two circuses were combined and 'The Greatest Show on Earth' was formed. Now you can enjoy some of the most famous circus acts in history; all you have to do is to buy Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus Youngstown tickets.
